While inspecting some minor rock damage to the skeg, I noticed a small (1/8") hole on the forward aspect of the gearcase about the same level as the water intake screens. I found no reference to this hole in the shop manual and am curious as to it's function since mine appears to be blocked with debris. Do I need to clean it out?

Likely that is the pitot tube opening. A device/method to measure speed in mph or knots. My guess is that you do not have a speedometer but instead use gps or paddle wheel to measure speed. If you did have a Honda speedometer and if that opening is the pitot tube then the speedometer would not work when blocked.

Regards,

Good call, Mark!

The tube leads through the engine and up to a rubber tube that leads out at the front of the mounting bracket. It has a plastic fitting to connect to another tube that leads forward to the helm, if you have that kind of speedometer.

Many folks find the tube and connector and wonder if their engine isn't connected up right!

Not to worry. That is, unless you paid for that kind of speedometer!

Joe.

Thanks for the replies. Mystry solved! Glad I don't have the Honda speedo, it would rarely function as a result of the seaweed blockages.
