Have any of you found a way to install and hide a head ( manual-electric) and a small holding tank aboard the 22' cruiser model??
The c-dory boaters seem to be an innovative bunch which have been reinforced by reading the c-brat site. I know the 25' sports a head but trailering is better served with the 22' model.
your response would be welcome. thanks boom

I don't remember ever having heard of this done before on a 22, but maybe it has.

Problem is, the toilet would have to be placed in the same place as the PortaPotti on the centerline in the first part of the v-berth, then the tank under the front dinette locker.

How much extra water would have to bee carried for it to work?

Who would want to give up storage in the forward dinette locker?

It would also make the convertible forward facing dinette seat impossible as an option.

Then too, you'd have to find a pump out to empty it. The PortaPottti can be picked up (tank part) and emptied many more places by simply being poured down a regular shore based head.

El and Bill (Halcyon) (who have lived/cruised on a 22 for several years now) have told us several times that they feel the PortaPotti is the simplest and most effective option for a toilelt on the 22.

Many folks move the PortaPotti out in the cockpit at night to make it more convenient to use while the v-berth is in use for sleeping.

I'll attach a link here to an older thread discussing the subject further.

Joe.

Hi again!

The "Edit" function doesn't see to work right now, so I'll have to post the promised line (url=http://www.c-brats.com/viewforum.php?f=39]here[/url] to the waste systems topics.

Good Luck!

Yep -- still strong supporters of the porta-potty. For us, a seat is a seat is a seat. Once sitting, they are all the same to us. The porta-potty is simple, inexpensive, easy to maintain and dump. There is no odor and no problem. If there is, you can buy a new one for about $100 (less than the cost of a minor repair on a marine head).

We've had marine heads on other boats, and not a shred of doubt in our minds, after using the porta-potty for almost six years -- that's definitely the way to go on a 22'. Easy to store, privacy behind the zip up screen, in the cockpit at night if necessary -- we were 5 weeks in Alaska this summer with four aboard our 22, and the porta-potty worked perfectly with no fuss and no muss.

If we had a 25, we'd have a porta-potty in the head.

I agree with Bill and El. If I was to order the 25 again I would have a porta potti in the heqd instead of the fixed fixture. You then have more storage in the stern as you don't need the 25 gal tank and the maserater pump and hoses. Move it out and you can stand and shower.

Yup David, El and Bill -- exactly what I did BEFORE I ordered my 25. Less weight, more storage area, no hassles, no embarrassiments, easy to maintain. I too have had the 'marine toilet' with holding tank, valves and hoses (which had to be replaced right after delivery, they used shower drain hoses for better bend radius', but turned out to be VERY odor permeable...). Hear-hear for the good ol' porta-potty! KISS principle all the way..

BTW, if I owned a 22 I'd consider one of those Coleman shower/changing curtains for the cockpit in those situations where there might be too many lights or boats close by to offer privacy in the cockpit. I'd hang it from the bimini, or of course a good cockpit top and curtains.

Don't like portaging the PortaPotti? "Mission Brown" got you down?

The probability of pumpout plumming problems got you in a Purple Tither?

Here's a way out learned from the UNITED STATES COAST GUARD STATION GOLDEN GATE CREW:

Even the new 47 ft Surf Rescue Boats have only a PortaPotti, not a fully plummed head, which is a testament to how many and how nasty plumbing problems can be on a boat.

Still and all, the crew doesn't really relish and fight over who gets the job of dumping the dumpseat when going ashore.

The KISS Simple Solution is, well, elegant, in an ironic sort of way:

When doing one's business, each participating member lines the PortaPotti with a garbage bag first.

When finished, the bag is tied off and thrown into another, second bag.

Shoreside on terra firma, the outer bag is tied off and deposited forthwith into the garbage bound for the land fill.

This is so clean and simple it makes the regular PortaPotti Drill seem archaeic and obsolete.

If you want to buy a plastic toilet seat (snap on ring) to fit a 5-gallon bucket, you can use the lined bucket instead of the PortaPotti, and leave the P-P in your garage, keep the bucket in the back of your boat to hold other items (when it's not doing it's "duty", as it stays clean) and use the potty space up in the v-berth for extra storage.

Now there's a Simple Solution that creates storage space too!

We went with the plastic bucket and seat on the 18. We have a 3 gal bucket that fits under the back of the V berth. We also carry a plastic jug of kitty litter. Soaks up the liquid and no smell.

Norm-

Good tip about the kitty litter! Never thought of that! Good idea. Could design a whole toilet system around Tidy Kat (?!?)

Additional thinking:

"Even the new 47 ft Surf Rescue Boats have only a PortaPotti, not a fully plummed head, which is a testament to how many and how nasty plumbing problems can be on a boat."

-probably also has something to do with the fact that the Surfboats are designed to self-right when rolled over upside down.

Otherwise, they'd have to borrow the toilet from "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Why? My mother's Italian relatives used to do it all the time.

It may be illegal to dump untreated waste in the garbage but there are powders you can use. There is a product called Wag Bags and it uses Poo Powder. The claim is that it is legal to dump it in the garbage if you use the Poo Powder. This was developed for backpackers, kayakers or anyone with space/weight restrictions.

I have also seen another powder product recently in an outdoor magazine that does the same thing but I don't remember the name.

Don't know if the kitty litter would make it legal but would probably work okay.

Hi Folks,

I have a 15' PortiPotti and just love it. It is the best thing since sliced Bread. We have two great testimonies. El and Bill who have given it the test of time, and the USCG who, for once in their history, "kept it simple".
