|
|
Hi Folks,
I'm looking for some feedback on brakes for dual-axle trailers. About two years ago I bought a new custom trailer for my 22 Classic from a local builder here in the Houston area. I've never really been pleased with the surge brakes compared to those on the old single-axle trailer that came with the boat in 1984 (which finally rusted away!). My new trailer has disc brakes on the front axle and is plumbed with all flexible brake hose. I was poking around on the Champion Trailer website looking for some stainless brake tubing to replace my long flexible hose runs, to cut down on pressure loss, and noted that they recommended brakes on the rear axle in dual-axle applications where you were going to install brakes on only one axle. So my question is, if you've got a dual-axle trailer with brakes on only one axle, which axle has the brakes????
Thanks!

For some reason, most tandem trailers with brakes on one axle have them only on the front, perhaps because it's easier to put them there (shorter).
I've read where single axle brakes should be on the rear axle, rather than the front, because of the weight transfer that goes on during braking (rear sqsuats, lifts front axle up).
