|

Our perticular boat, (a Tom Cat 255) center anchor locker, has one drain hole on the Stb side leading to the stb outside locker. There is a equal sized hole out of the Stb side locker with the clam shell on the outside. There is no hole between the mid locker and the port outside locker (which also has a hole with clam shell over the outside). I suspect that there should be a hole between the mid anchor locker and the outside port locker. However, the water stands at least 3/4" deep in the stb locker, before it starts to drain.
Has anyone put a split PVC pipe or other cover over the bottom of the outside lockers to seal them off? I understand that the TC 24's had a single hole in the bottom of the locker, with clam shell over it, but that caused water to be forced up into the mid locker and into the foreward hulls.
Is there a better drain system for the TC 24 or 255, which will allow water to drain out of the anchor locker, but leave the outside lockers useful for other storage?
Thanks for any comments. _________________ Bob Austin

Where did you hear this?
I still have a problem with water getting into the pontoons beneath my forward bunk, usually after bouncing around in rough stuff.
Somebody somewhere actually gave you some information about what causes this? I need details. _________________ John & Susan |

He got it from me.
When we purchased our Tomcat, I noticed that water would collect in the forward part of the port sponson in rough water.
After looking in the rode locker, I noticed that the drain hole was three or so inches up the hull slope and not in the bottom. When the water is forced up the bottom face of the hull the clam shell cover catches it, and in the rode locker it ccmes.
I'm just guessing here, but it looked to me like the 24 was assembled as follows. The deck is placed in the hull, and the cabin is set on top. Than, the forward bulkhead is installed. If the deck to hull joint at the front is not properly glassed, and the bulkhead is put in place than sealed on the berth side, it is next to impossible to seal the inside of the rode locker. I know this, because I spent a week and a half with my head and or an arm in the locker hatch(never at the same time) glassing and fairing the inside of the locker.
When splashing about in the wet stuff, the water is forced into the rode locker via the funnel called a clam shell cover, into a rode locker with the drain hole anywhere but the bottom. The water than has to find a way out. If the hull to deck fit was not good(maybe because someone thought "no big deal, It'll seal when we install the bulkhead") the water drains out of the locker between the hull and deck joint.
I actually thought Thataways locker drain was a huge improvement. The rode locker is nowhere near as spacious(I've cramed 400 ft. of 1/2 inch line and 15 ft of chain into mine), but it is designed to drain and is finished on the inside. The drain tube from the port side of the locker, into the forward port storage compartment was not there. Although, the drain to the outside was installed. The Starboard drain was continuous from locker into stb compartment, and from the compartment to the outside, but holds water until it gets deep enough to drain out.
Water flows down hill, is more than a concept. It'll do it if it can. If they'd pour a bit of water in the locker at the factory they'd know in an instant if all was well.
I also noticed while doing this little chore, that the coreing was exposed where the drain hole was drilled thru. I fixed it when I fixed the locker.
It was while adding a longer anchor rode that I noticed the inside of the locker. If I hadn't done that, I'd of never noticed, until later, when the water in the sponson continued, and or got worse the more I used the boat. It was after the repair when I was replacing the rode, and blowing the little spade fuses(20 amp), that I realized the Windlass was wired thru the house wiring instead of a designated wire per Simpson specs. I fixed that right up. By the way, the slow blow 25 amp disconnect was in the dash for the Windlass, but the 20 amp spade fuse was sacrificial in light of how it was wired.
Now folks, My boat came out in 2003 and the factory has been working hard to put out a better product. The difference between my boat and the 255 is night and day. I still like my little boat. |

Gordon (Katkt) and I have hashed this out on several PM--mostly his idea and partly mine. Think the best solution, is to glass in the floor of the center anchor locker, to a level above both side drains--a slight "V" in the center of this filler, which leads to hose barbs epoxied into the bulkheads between the mid and each slide locker. Hose on each side (with down slope of about 1/4" per foot, to hose barb epoxied into outside hull (under neath the existing clam shell.
Any one see a negitive--could probably be done in the 24's also.

After I filled and faired the locker in the "Katie Kat" (I sloped the bottom from the sides to the middle after raising the middle to the drain), it drains fine. Any water that is scooped into the rode locker by the clamshell runs right back out.
I used Kitty Hair, and glass cloth to fair and slope the locker bottom. In retrospect, I'd probably cut tapered fillers out of mahogany or such, glass over them, and spend less time with my head in the hatch.
Somebody else mentioned water in the port sponson also in the last week or so. I can't remember if it was "byrdman", or the new guy John with the launching problems. |
