We got moved in to the new boat today; while transferring about a ton of stuff from the truck to the boat, up pulls a pickup with a true gentleman aboard: Dave (aka Oldgrowth here on the forum). We visited for a while ('till Joan put me back to work ), and then Dave gave us a hand at the ramp and the dock... helped prevent a potential case of dock rash and earned our appreciative thanks.
A bit of a snafu we didn't anticipate: seems the state of Washington doesn't have any method of temporary registration for out of state folks buying a boat in their state. We have Fed-Exed the registration info to SD, and hope to have our registration in a couple days. In the meantime, we have moved onboard and snuck the boat into a nice marina in Olympia, Washington. Sitting out in the covered cockpit right now... temp is about 68º, kicking back, and trying to learn the new systems on the boat. Molly the catboat cat (who has been quite unhappy with traveling on the road, seems to be loving the boat - she climbed in the shelves in the V-berth and went right to sleep. I think having to stay in the slip for a couple days will give her time to settle in. Might be a couple days before we can start exploring on the water.
Still trying to figure out where to put everything... and wondering how Bill and El actually do this "minimalist" thing they've told us about.
The folks at C-Dory (especially Jill) were very helpful with our paperwork and Fed-Ex situation today. We are truly enjoying the boat... probably even be more fun when we can get away from the dock! (The lady at the harbor office today told us: "Don't even think about going out without registration numbers on that boat. If you do, expect a big ticket.")
Best wishes,
Jim & Joan B. (and Molly the catboat cat) _________________ Jim & Joan

Just a thought, but as I recall if you have a copy of your purchase documents and proof of an application for registration you can be on the water. I used this some years ago, but also carried a copy of the law (which I cannot quite remember now), but then I did not get stopped. We did have a nice conversation with the Coast Guard at the dock, but it consisted of interest in the boat, not that it had no registration! _________________

Yes, we used the purchase documentation initially to use the original CatyMae on the water...they mostly just wave and ask, "New boat?" or "Nice boat!" |

Carry your Bill of Sale, or other documentation the good folks gave you. You won't have any problem. We did the same thing last year. The chances of even getting checked are infinitely small. But could happen if you are involved in an accident. I ran for years without a current registration as a tax protest due to some foulups the Washington tax people caused and never had a problem, I got checked maybe twice in ten years. I actually had a park ranger get nosier than the proper officials. |

If you have the registration numbers for the dinghy on the portable plates, use those. Thats what we did when we got our boat. We just put them in the windows. _________________ Roger

Next time I see you, which will probably be at the second coho season at newport in september, I will tell you about driving my daughters' car in washington with an oregon drivers license and oregon plates, while being financed in washington, and falling under the scrutiny of a washington highway patrolman. Very tense. |

Add another to the "don't worry about it" column...
Like you guys, I bought my boat in WA, planning to register it out of state when I returned home.
I don't have a cite handy, but I specifically recall looking into it, and using a new boat on WA waters was allowed for up to 30 days. This info was supplied to me by both my dealer, as well as somebody on the phone at the WA Department of Licensing. As others have mentioned, a dated bill of sale on board was all that was required...
I was on the water for a couple weeks with no numbers, and like others, had no problems at all. I passed numerous CG vessels as well - nobody gave me a second glance.
That was back in 2004...I suppose it's possible things have changed since then. _________________

Just for everybody’s information, the following WAC covers unregistered vessels in Washington State.
WAC 308-93-078
Temporary use of an unregistered vessel.
May a vessel be operated on the waters of this state if it is not registered? An unregistered vessel may be operated on the waters of this state for fifteen consecutive days from the date of purchase using the notarized bill of sale in lieu of a registration certificate. The notarized bill of sale shall be carried on the vessel and contain:
(1) The name and address of the purchaser;
(2) The model year, make, and hull identification number of the vessel;
(3) The date of sale; and
(4) The name, address and signature of the seller.
[Statutory Authority: RCW 88.02.070 and 88.02.100. 01-08-021, § 308-93-078, filed 3/27/01, effective 4/27/01; 98-16-030, § 308-93-078, filed 7/29/98, effective 8/29/98. Statutory Authority: RCW 88.02.030, 88.02.070, 88.02.120, 88.02.130, 88.02.140, 88.02.150 and 88.02.100. 86-10-068 (Order TL/RG 25), § 308-93-078, filed 5/7/86.]
I talked to Scott at C-Dory, explained what was needed and he faxed me a notarized copy of the bill of sale. Jim and Joan just picked it up and are on their way back to their boat. _________________ Dave

Thanks for the correction, Dave. |

Geez, Dave, I don't know - citing WACs??? What's next? Res ipsa? Expresio unias est exclusio alterius? I recall a comment from my Uncle Don about "blood sucking sea creatures" or something in that other thread!!! Better be careful!!! _________________

I'm pretty sure I saw Brock doing that when we were at one of the islands. I kept the kids away. _________________ TyBoo Mike

Thanks for checking into it further and for the help with getting the fax from C-Dory, Dave. SD couldn't get our Fed-Ex return (we sent them the prepaid envelope with our paperwork) out today, so it will be Monday before we see anything.
And now, Joan is out doing laundry. Seems we are still needing to do our "land running" for a bit... must be another "need to know" mission, and she doesn't think I need to know (you married guys will understand). I'll be heading out as soon as I can... never let 'em take me alive.
Best wishes,
Jim B.
And thanks all (especially Dave) for your help and encouragement with this. |
