I've been fighting a Raymarine problem for weeks now and am not getting much help from their help desk. I know many of you are sharper than they and I'm asking for your help.

Here's the scenario. Raymarine E-80 Multifunction display, Raymarine NMEA0183 Multiplexer, KVH Azimuth 1000 Fluxgate compass with NMEA output. Plumbed into the E-80 through the multiplexer. When heading is added to the data bar, the correct compass heading shows in the data bar. Then you pull away from the dock, same heading is indicated throughout your cruise. If the compass is turned off and back on, the correct heading at the moment it comes back on is shown. But it never changes after that. The light on the multiplexer blinks like crazy showing data is flowing but there are other inputs and outputs also.

Any ideas? Thanks

Folks have had strange symptoms occur after upgrading both C80 and E80 firmware and in many cases the solution has been to perform a full factory reset which means, if memory serves me, turning off the E80, then turning it on while holding the far left softkey down. (Procedure is in the book.) You'll have to re-do all your personal settings, but try it and ONLY set and test heading on the data bar before changing anything else.

Nothing like going back to square one and starting over.

Good luck.

Don

Don, Thanks for the tip. As it happens, I was down at Sequim Bay this afternoon giving scenic rides to female crabs (up in the trap, down by free fall ). I tried the system reset with no change in the heading reading. I brought the 20lbs. of Raymarine manuals home to re-read.

Thanks again, Roger

I'm not sure if this will help, but the C-80 manual recommends turning off the heading updates from the GPS receiver on the NMEA bus when a fast heading (KVH?) device is also on the NMEA or SEATALK bus. I assume this is to avoid two different heading words being routed around the network on the boat.

As the famous inspector Clouseau said " The problem is solve-ed". Seeking a simple solution, I eliminated the multiplexer and wired the compass only to the NMEA input of the E-80. Voila! Everything works as advertised. Marpa works very nicely, Radar overlay is right on and the heading reading follows the compass exactly. The boat icon even points in the right direction. We are happy campers Laughing Laughing

I think I can live without 2 DSC radios capable of calling for help, one should be enough. Now I have two mantras to remember, Keep it simple and Read the checklist.

While out today, the speed seemed awfully slow. I turned on my backup GPS (and it has always been spot-on) and discovered that the E-80 is reading about 30-50% slow (i.e. doing 6 knots, it shows 3, doing 11 knots, it show 7, doing 20 knots, it shows 12-13, running 4500 rpm or so). I've been using GPS for years and never run into this before. I've scanned through the Raymarine book, but haven't seen anything about this... I'll check into it more this evening. Anyone run into this before?

It seemed a bit "slow" during the sea trial

Loving the boat!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

The E80 may be displaying speed over water rather than speed over ground (GPS). You can calibrate speed over water which is coming from the combination paddle wheel~depth sender. Calibration is available when the depth screen is displayed and the menu key is pushed. Scroll down to the proper setting which I believe is called speed offset.
