Zebra Mussels... How to keep them out of fittings?

Do Zebra Mussels get up into thru hull fittings? Can they get into generator or Heat Pump pipes? Can they get into the thruster housing tubes? If you leave a boat docked, what should be done to minimize the damage from Zebra Mussels?
