Shifting Cable stretched

My Dealer diagnosed that Thistle has a worn/stretched out steering cable on the port side. He has it adjusted out as far as he feels safe. I have never replaced one of these on this boat and "it wonders me" if I shouldn't just go ahead and replace both while I'm at it. Are these pretty straight forward or is it likely to be fraught with great difficulties? I have trouble getting in there and wonder what others have done?

Maybe I am missing something--but all of the mechanical steering on the 22 C Dory I have owned were push / pull single cable, and all ran on the Starboard side. The other option is going to hydraulic steering. If. you are going to want an auto pilot, the hydraulic version is far better than the "push pull" steering cable. The single push pull cable is fairly easy to replace. Be sure the cable is long enough, use the old to pull the new through into place.

Oh gosh. I did it again. Instead of steering cable read shifting cable. It’s the shifting cable that needs to be replaced. Should I do both Shifting cables while I’m at it.

I would do both shifting cables and throttle cables. Be sure you get the correct length. They are farily easy to follow through.
