If you haven’t seen or tried the Eraser Wheel it BY FAR beats heat guns or chemicals. It only took me about 2 beers to remove 8 letters from both sides of my 22 Cruiser. Bought at an auto parts store! $35 but WORTH EVERY CENT.
I used the “Sure Bilt 3-1/2” Eraser Wheel With Arbor” (part#4999-036) in a good cordless drill. I did run through 3 batteries.
I am in no way associated with this product. It just saved my life.[/img] |

I always found that a heat gun followed by acetone was a good way to get lettering off things. Doesn't even take two beers. |

I scare me...I avoid potentially damaging rotating tools. I looked at the wheel but felt for sure I'd damage the boat...especially if Beer is involved.
For my recent boat I carefully pulled the letters off, nudging with old hotel keys. Then I removed the Lion's share of the remaining adhesive with acetone on a white cloth.
That's what I did but perhaps the wheel would've worked better.
Once dry I mixed 2 tbsp baking soda and 1/4 cup of vinegar into an old and large pickle jar. This mixture really took it a step further to where I can't see where the old letters were unless I look really hard.

The eraser wheels are nothing new--been around a long time. I like them for removing striping and pin strips type of material. Heat, and slowing lifting the old vinyl has worked well for me. I prefer an adhesive remover. Acetone will soften the gel coat. Some of the adhesive removers do not. A good cut and buff in the area of the old letters will also help to get the shadow out. _________________ Bob Austin
