Hi Roger,

Thanks for the info! One last question for now and then I'll wait for your next report Laughing ; is that "couple inches of clearance" when the engines are at a full lock turn? (so that if you tilt them when they're fully turned the hydrofoil clears the tab then?).

Oops, one more...are the hydrofoils the Honda SST, Doel-fin or?

TIA

Les-
I've loaded some pics of the trim tabs on Fishtales. They are in the trim tabs photo album.

Got on the water yesterday around 09:30 and played with the trim tabs for about an hour and set the auto controller-- man, what a great system.
Trimmed the engines for optimum performance and set the trim tabs.
Once the auto controller was set, I had PJ move to the other side of the boat and 3-4 seconds later the tabs started adjusting for the change. Rigged two rods for trout and set the lines. Running on one engine, the troll was too fast for my liking, 2.5 mph, set the trim tabs all the way down and slowed to 2.0 mph. Fished till a little after 12:00 and came in with 3 trout (after releasing the ones that were lip hooked) Ya- you know what was for dinner-- oak smoked trout fillets

I am curious about hydrofoils. I have a Tom Cat that runs pretty flat at all speeds. What might a hydrofoil on the motor due re: cavataion and economy. Is it overkill on a Tom cat?

Phil -

Sorry this post sat for so long without anybody noticing.

Unless you are having cavitation or ventilation problems, I don't think you would want any changes. If you're running flat all the time, and are good with it, then a foil will probably cost you some economy rather than save. If you do have some prop ventilation going on, and the motor height is good, then maybe the foil would have some benefit. But as I recall from running Brydman's TC when it was Dusty's TC, even on hard turns the props never lost their bite, and he didn't have foils.

On my twin 50s I do have this cavitation problem, in turns, sometimes even going straight ahead at 10 to 14 knots my engines change noise without changing the RPM. When you mention the height of the engines could it be that the dealer had installed them the wrong way? My C-Dory was the first C-Dory boat sold by my dealer on this Island. Is it that the C-Dory would be different than other type of hulls for height on the leg. The Dealer sells all kind of boats Orca's, Campion's, Double Eagle's, Grady White's to mention a few. You would think the would know how to rig boats! Gary

Gary,
My 22 has twin 40HP Hondas, but I believe the 40 and 50 are identical size. My engines are mounted 3/4" high( bracket above the tramsom). This seems to give me good performance without any ventilation in turns. As I understand it, you normally mount an outboard as high as possible without causing ventilation. The less lower unit in the water, the less drag and the more efficient. Of course determining this is by trial and error/ judgement usually worked out in advance by an experienced dealer. In your case I would have thought if you are getting ventilation you would see an increase in RPM?
