I have a 6HP yamaha kicker on an adjustable bracket that I like to use a fair amount when I'm not in an hurry. I decided to add the alternator kit (6 amps) to it as a safety in case I drain the batteries too much while anchor, and also that I can use the auto pilot with kicker without draining the batteries too much. I mostly row my dinghy to shore but I sometime like to go explore with it, in that case I like to use the kicker. So my question is, would I shorten the life of the regulator if I run the engine without having it plug to a battery? _________________ Stephan

You mentioned both an alternator and a regulator. Not sure what a regulator would be.
Normally an alternator *must* be attached to a battery or it will burn out almost immediately. _________________ Sandy McKean

The alternator (or in this case a generator might be more accurate?) produce the power, the regulator regulate the amount of power sent to the battery according to the state of charge of the battery as to not overcharge it. I believe it also rectify it to be compatible to a DC 12 volt system or in some case 24 volt. |

Go down to Marita sea & Ski & ask?
Also Alternator makes AC, Generator makes DC.
Rectifiers change AC to DC Volt regulator, well you get it. |

Here is a photo of the "charging kit". Based on this, I would suggest that you can run it without a battery. I have owned several outboards with similar charging circuits and ran them without a battery . _________________ Bob Austin

Thanks tsturm, kind of what I thought but I had a small doubt and didn't want to be wrong.
Also I'm pretty sure that Marita Sea and Ski has been close for a while now. |

I don't know about this particular kit, but I have used several of the the Tohatsu SailPro (have charging circuits by default) 6hp motors over the years without a battery connected and have never had a problem. |
