I know some of you guys know things so I'm going to ask your opinion.

Would you be scared of a Yamaha 115hp motor, on a 2012 boat, that has been stored since new in a high and dry in SW Florida? It's only had the 100 hour service. I'm sure that was about 7 years ago. It currently has 212 hours on the motor.

I'm thinking the high and dry flushed the motor every time but only 1 service in 10 years scares me.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

It's also a 2012 motor.

Ken, first off I don't own a Yamaha and have never worked on one, but believe they are on top of their game. Great motors. If it were me looking to purchase it I would want a sea trial. if that isn't possible I would want to have a certified mechanic look at it. That would probably be at your expense. But really, I wouldn't be afraid of it if it actually has only 212 hours on it. Those hours can be verified by a mechanic. (you can't always trust the hour meters). At 212 hours the motor isn't broken in yet. You need to take the steps to make yourself feel comfortable with the deal If the asking price is right. Good luck.

I would say the best running boat motor I have ever had is a 40 hp four stroke yamaha jet. Yamaha makes great stuff in my opinion and their outboards are generally fantastic.

If it runs out well, doesn't blow smoke on heavy acceleration, has good oil pressure, and doesn't make any unusual noises, I think it's probably fine. I'd be a bit concerned about rust on machined surfaces because of the prolonged storage, but if it works as it should, it probably doesn't have enough to be that concerned about.

When was the motor actually run last?

If it was last week and the motor worked fine I wouldn't worry about it. If it has been years, I'd want to test it out.

Check the compression, if any question then do a leak down test. I probably would squirt a little light oil in each cylinder and then turn it over by hand a few times before firing it up. You may want to replace all hoses, filters, and the plugs. Definitely do a sea trial. I would not be all that worried if it checks out on the above.

Thanks guys! I'm trying to pick up a little lake boat as the C-Dory is at the beach, 4 hours away.
