C-Dory 16 Angler: ideas for a 3rd seat?

Hi there - I'm new to boating, getting a start with with a 2004 Angler 16. I took the plunge after, among other things, finding this wonderful online community.

I'm hoping folks will have some ideas or advice to share about adding another seat or two to the Angler. We expect to take day cruises on the interior waters of the San Juans, and it would be nice to be able to bring along a 3rd or 4th person.

I know I'm not the first to ask this on the site. I wanted to list what I've learned so far and see if there's any new or updated wisdom? Thanks in advance for any help!

Cooler + cushion at the stern: Something like this, with a handy seat-back?

Does the cooler need to be fastened to the floor to avoid bouncing around?

The seating is at floor level for the first and at least 13.5" for the second... Any thoughts on either approach?

Fold-down gunwale seat: Garelick apparently used to make a fold-down seat that maybe could be mounted behind one of the cockpit seats.

Are the gunwales strong enough for this?

Among other things, I'm interested in moving weight towards the front of the boat....

I have a 2007 CD 16 Cruiser. Check the photos of the Sock Monkey for one idea that may work for you. If I have extra passengers we add a cushion and the soft foldable stadium seats. The base just rests on the deck and the whole assembly can be taken out.

Well, here's what we did for a third passenger seat on our angler. We had a portapotti in a bracket right behind the driver's seat. We covered it with a Sunbrella cover with a nice cushion on top .It moved the weight forward and covered the "can".

We use these when we want to sit in the cockpit when at anchor. They are low and allow us to peek over the gunnel to watch wildlife. Stow at about the size of a thermos bottle. I made a cross web attachment so that they don't sink into the sand when on the beach at Lake Powell. Comfortable, depending on a person's size and weight.

Like you, we are new to boating, too, and we also went the same route as you with a 16 ft. Angler, same year as yours. We felt it was the right size to learn with. And we feel that we did not just purchase a boat, but we got a great group of friends and support for any and all questions we could ever have regarding our first boating adventures. While we have not been able to use our boat as much as planned yet, we hope that this year will find us putting in more time on the water, gaining experience and confidence. Personally I use an 80qt Ice chest with a reinforced top as an extra seat.

It holds all of my extra fishing gear, down rigger, crab lines, Line puller, etc.

It serves as a step to a high dock.

It seats two people for short trips.

It also serves as a movable ballast for trimming the boat.

And....On rare occasion it serves as a fish box.

See my pictures on Lil'Sis. I made a hinged bench seat. It can be folded down when not in use and quickly swings up. I had a seat pad made for it...great for the dogs. It has worked well for me.

A follow-on to my original question, if that's OK?

Are the gunwales in a 16 strong enough to attach a seat to?

Specifically: drill through the inside wall and bolt to a seat to it? (There's foam between the inside wall and boat exterior wall, correct?)

I presume one like this with a drop-down leg would be better (i.e., less load on the gunwale)?

(But I think that one probably wouldn't work for a different reason, as I think its drop-down support likely wants to be directly below the wall mount, which wouldn't be the case in this application...)

That removable Garelick seat should work just fine. We had the removable Garelick steps on our 16s. They used the same holders as the seat. Also, in this application no bolt was required just simple stainless sheet metal screws.

I wanted to name our boat "Bum Squeaker" because when you are screaming across the surface of the water at WOT, it is squeaky bum time!
Alas, the admiral said NO.

If you follow English soccer and Sir Alex Ferguson (ex-Man Utd manager), you will be familiar with "squeaky bum time".

Posting this for anyone in the future looking for additional seating for the 16' as I was recently.
Here is what I went with and seems to be the best option I've seen so far for the 16'.
