This is a screen shot of my Lowrance gen3-9
I know my card is expired. ( I will update it next year)
Navionics says they think my screen is doing this because my ipad which is updated synced with the out of date plotter.
Is this true in your opinion?
Has anyone else experienced this?
The weird thing is the shaded areas change as I zoom in and out
A penny for your thoughts?

What you are seeing is the chart catalogue. Nothing more or less. This is a baseman and not for navigation. So you will have to buy the newer chip. Probably just for that area where you boat, unless you are going to trailer out of the PNW. _________________ Bob Austin

Thank you once again Dr Bob
At least I know there is nothing wrong.
Will start out the new boating season in 2023 with a new card
I remember when you didn’t have to pay those yearly subscriptions!

Journey On has 2 ea Lowrance MFDs, one gen 2 and the other an Elite. Several years ago, C-Map was selling a single chip that covered North America and I bought 2 of those. Been using them ever since and there's no expiration date. You might look at C-Map charts, especially "C-Map Discover Charts North America - USA / Canada". The cost is $125. Lowrance will use C-Map.
I didn't know that Navionics shifted their chips over to a subscription basis. I'll have to look at the Navionics I have. That's the only discriminator between the two; otherwise they have the same info, and I believe, accuracy. They all get their info from the local hydrographic office; they certainly don't do their own surveying. That's got to be a great business model, sell something that you have to buy new every year.

Navionics charts will work indefinitely once you get the chip. The fee you pay gets the chip and updates for 1 year. When your year ends you can still use the charts you already purchased, just can't get updates anymore. Since the places I go don't change very much, I only buy a subscription once every several years. Do an update with at the start and once again before it ends. Once you have a chip, the subscriptions are half price. |
