Joel (Sea3PO), Steve and Miloh (Swanny) joined me on Fishtales today for a day of catching lings and vermillion. We had a great time. Left Channel Islands Harbor around 09:00 with a half scoop of live squid and made a beeline out to the gap between Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands. Made a few drops on some marks for a few fish and brought home some nice fish. Joel caught a nice sheepshead- out of season -- dang!! Got back to the harbor around 15:30 with 3 nice reds and 4 lings

That sounds like a pretty good way to spend a Saturday. I bet Joel was excited. What exactly and how big is a Sheepshead?

YYY - I know, I know - I should look it up myself. Well, I kinda did, and this is what I found. Looks like some kind of tropical aquarium fish. Or sturgeon bait. Do ya eat 'em? Hold the thing by the tail and dip it in red sauce like a shrimp? How big was the one Joel caught? Two inches?

Sorry (sort of). I haven't been fishing for a while, and maybe I am a little envious.

Here's a pic of Joel's sheephead
Joel's sheephead
We didn't weigh it, but my guess is about 5lbs
And yes, they are excellent eating. but they are out of season so we had to release to catch another day.
You can read about the sheephead here

Whew! BTDT, and most tasty fish. Filet and release size.

Ok you Oregonian fisher people, tell me about the Willamette river. My daughter, son in law and two grandkids moved to Newberg and are excited about this river. Will a C-Dory be able to cruise it and is it worth fishing?

Now here's a sheephead fishy. Ugly sucker, unless they're good to eat. Aptly named, counted a bunch trying to get to sleep last night.

Never seen one of them in my river or bay, may be there but they're hiding.

Now that's a nice sheepshead. I know the guy in the top left of the pic. We are going out on the "Truth" later this month to dive at Santa Rosa Island. I've caught some nice fish out at San Miguel. I have some sheepshead fillets in the freezer now, and yes, they are excellent eating.

Sounds like a great day on the water, one thing for sure I've never seen a pretty bottom fish and the sheepshead looks to fit right in. Eating is another story though. I broke some halibut out of the freezer last night and treated myself to battered and deep fried halibut strips, it was sooo good.

Way to go Gramps, you got a fishing pal for life. Those are some real nice photos and I bet he had a ball. My oldest grandchild should be ready for a fishing pole soon. I can't wait!

DON'T GO SWIMMING in the Willamette. Although it has some pretty good spring chinooks the river's local resident fishes will probably be high in mercery levels around the main portland area. Whenever fishing, try upstream from portland downriver from the willamette falls and around there. They have a great ramp at clackamas river which leads right into the beautiful river. Fish in the morning and start cruising around the portland area sightseeing. Beware of the VERY shallow water (about 2-5 feet but you can't see it from afar) around the millwaukie ramp! I once got parts of propellor chiped from the shallows and should be avoided. Pay attention to buoys as they HELP you.

Right now during August the fishing's pretty much on smallmouth as the water heats up. However, during the beginning of summer, SHAD, SALMON, STEELHEAD are on their prime and I love fishing on the bank for shad. Research some more and you'll probably find much more info on fishng there. Good luck on your excursions.
