Hi All! I am looking to make my own camper-back as I just can't stomach the $5000-6000 cost. to have one custom one made. Does any one know the name of the plastic or vinyl attachment piece that is screwed onto the back of the cabin and is sewn into the canvas to make a water tight connection?
Thanks! _________________ Derin |

Hi Derin,
You'll find Sailrite very helpful: https://www.sailrite.com/ If you search for "track" you'll see options for that piece. Good luck!

The material is called "awning rail". It is in plastic or aluminum. With time the plastic will distort.
You put a narrow piece with a "bolt rope" which slides into the awning rail, and then a heavy duty zipper on the other side of this 2" to 3" wide piece.
You will need a heavy duty sewing machine, and special needles for sewing the Sunbrella fabric. There is the option of using the heavier Shelter Rite, which is fabricated with HH 66 glue. This material is similar to what PVC inflatable boats or industrial traps on trucks are made of.
I made the waterproof curtains for the C Dory 25. They are heavier and bulkier than the sewn Sunbrella. the vinyl is heavy duty and clear vinyl glues in well. I used common sense fasteners. _________________ Bob Austin

Hi Derin;
I have a extra track that was in my boat when I bought it new. It is new but over the years it has become somewhat distorted, I’m sure a hairdryer and screws as it is being attached would straighten it out.
Anyway it’s yours if you want it.
I will be home until this Saturday then gone for a few months.
Let me know if your interested.
Dave

I made new side curtains re-using the plastic awning rail and the original vinyl awning rope. Instead of sewing the awning rope to Sunbrella, I glued it to vinyl coated polyester with HH66. Also used common sense fasteners instead of zippers. Some pictures in my photo album under Canvas Projects - PVC side curtains. I used the moldy old curtains with corroded zippers as patterns. |

Thanks Raven Dancer! I appreciate it but I ordered some new materials from sailrite.com I am going attempt at making a simple setup for our 3 week adventure into the San Juan's in a few weeks. Really looking forward to it, but also a bit nervous:) if anyone has some good tips I would love any and all advice! Currently researching where I can put my boat in and park my truck and trailer around Anacortes area for the 3 weeks.
Thanks for all your input! |

No worries I’ll just hang it back on the wall.
We are heading up to the San Juan’s tomorrow for the next couple months so maybe we will see you up there. We launch and store the truck and trailer at Cap Sante in the middle of town. Have a great time if we don’t see you.
