Hello all,

First post so I apologize if this is a repeat topic. I am currently in the process of purchasing my parent’s 2007 C Dory Cruiser 22 as it is a second boat for them. It has 260 total hours on a mercury 90 and seems to be in overall great condition mechanically (the outboard looks new). The older gentleman they got it from apparently wasn’t the greatest boater and struck a couple docks, causing gouges on the starboard side near the stern and a long scratch on the port side.

My parents roughly filled the gouges on the starboard side and I was told that the fiberglass was exposed slightly. The gouge on the port side has exposed fiberglass as well and has not been filled. Should I be concerned with water intrusion and is there a quick test to see?

Above the gouges on the starboard side also appears to be stress cracking. Should I be concerned with this? Everything else seems to be in great condition, it has low hours and is a great price.

Thank you!

Use a moisture meter test a few areas around the damage and in non damaged areas to get a base reading. You can also take the boat to a fiberglass shop and have them take a look see. They'll be able to tell you if the substrate is damaged and how much to properly repair the gel coat too. I personally wouldn't be too worried about the vertical damage above the water line too much. Horizontal and anything below that has had fiberglass showing might be a different story.

Bare fiberglass will absorb moisture over time and should not be left exposed. Here's a great resource for DIY boat repair...

None of the areas you pictured are cored, so I wouldn't be concerned about water intrusion. Also, the scratches look relatively minor. The stress cracks look like the boat smacked a piling or something, but again, I wouldn't be concerned if the boat is a good price.
I would recommend doing a very thorough inspection of the boat that would include having a surveyor check for wet core. Do not let the relatively low hours lull you into a lax inspection.

From the photos posted, and description, I would not worry about water intrusion. If there is/was, fiberglass exposed, it should be filled and then gel coated.

Good luck with purchase of your parent's C Dory. Nice legacy to pass down!
