Thanks for the answers. PM sent to Jim. I had donated and supported the Twin Brigantines project. Great sailing program for LA school district children. My grand children went on a day sail aboard one of the two,
The Isthmus has changed from a place where the bar was a true thatched hut and cockroaches fell out of the palm fronds into your drink!
I liked it better the old way--but the mountains are still the same, and if you get away from the "development", then I probably has the old charm.
Alas, I am not traveling to S. Calif. anymore. I am hoping that installation of two more cardiac stents a few weeks ago will extend the lifetime warranty on my old body another 5 years. _________________ Bob Austin

We missed Catalina this year-- we were on the road with our 5th wheel all of August and more. Over 6200 miles of fun. _________________ Roger

SO, 2023. Am I on target reserving August 6-12, 2023, on my calendar for a possible 18th Annual Catalina Adventure? After which I hope to stay another couple of days to visit with my step daughter in San Diego. Which brings up another question. Where is a good place to launch in San Diego? And has any one anchored off near The Rady Shell at Jacob's Park? The Step says they have music concerts there and it might be fun to cruise out on our boat to listen to them. Rosanne may or may not participate in the Catalina crossing. Will need to learn more about the sea state and such before she'd agree to go. Even if Catalina doesn't happen, I'm thinking of still possibly coming out with C-Traveler to cruise the bays. Colby |

There is a fairly new ramp (big!) on Shelter Island and a large parking area as well. |

Thanks Alain. I bookmarked the website for Shelter Island. I wonder if this would be a feasible place to launch from for the Catalina Island cruise, and leave the truck and trailer parked for two weeks max? Colby |

Feasible? Sure--some have come from as far as San Francisco, a multi-day trip by water. Would I do it? No, for two reasons: 1) Too many on-the-water miles, and 2) Prevailing NW winds would put you straight into the chop and swells--however, leaving at daybreak would most likely avoid most of that if you watch the weather, 60-70 nm(?) is a long slog. The main group launches from Marina Del Rey, nice ramps, and parking area relatively secure with regular police patrols, 30+ nm, and the waters in that area tend to be decent. I like San Pedro, Cabrillo Beach launch ramp, but a little iffy on the security, although I've never had a problem in the 40+ years I've used that area-YMMV, 20 nm. Others have launched out of Long Beach, but I'm not familiar, 25 nm?. And some have launched out of Dana Point, but again not familiar, 40+ nm and mostly into the prevailing winds again. _________________ Steve & Carmen

Thanks Steve. I’ll probably join others out of Marina Del Rey. Then afterwards load the boat out and launch in San Diego to take my step daughter out and site see around the bays there. Any advice is super welcome! It does look like Shelter Island does allow up to 72 hours parking which would be perfect for just that area. Colby |

Colby.
If you want to go to Catalina, especially with your wife's uneasiness, you definitely want to launch out of MDR because it is a short 30 mile trip, and the waters are smooth if one leaves early in the morning. Also, you will have group support if you go over with the pack. You definitely do not want to go to Catalina from San Diego. Terrible idea. Too far and would be beat to death. _________________ Jim on M/V Pounder

Thanks Jim. Think that clinches it. I’ll stay with you guys going over and back and then launch in San Diego just to cruise around there. |
