Dear All:
We now have “some” clarity on the new complex rules to be placed on offshore, wild salmon, sport fishing for the Bay Area Coast for this year. For May 2006, the time of the Extravaganza (actually from May 1 to June 11), salmon fishing will now likely be open in all waters of this region, including federal waters outside three miles.
The salmon size limit is 20 inches and the take limit is two fish per person per day, King (Chinook) salmon only. No more than one rod per angler. Circle hooks required when mooching; and single point, single shank, barb less hooks required for trolling.
The U.S. Secretary of Commerce is supposed to approve these regulations by May 1st. We are providing this information for the hardcore fishing guys such as Discovery and Dora Jean who could be interested.
At this point we will now likely be bringing our salmon fishing gear along on the Extravaganza for the off chance that some salmon could be running when we are down at the Bay. If the salmon were around and accessible, and the weather was safe, we could do some trolling (with metal) out the Golden Gate Saturday morning, departing from Sausalito, before we headed over to Alameda.
This is just another Extravaganza activity possibility for those who would be interested, and might be inclined. We will provide a later update on the regulations situation and fishing conditions, close to the time of the Event. _________________ Jim on M/V Pounder

Thanks for the salmon regs update Jim. Hey, I didn't know I was known as a "hardcore" fisherman?? Maybe a wannabe hc fisherman.. Now Fishtales Roger, that might be a better fit~!

Seems I've got another fly in the ointment. Saturday, May 20th is the opening of Safe Boating Week, and as the official photographer, I'm committed to covering the activities at Channel islands Harbor that weekend. So, if I attend at all, I'll have to return to L.A. on Friday. Another small glitch is the fact that I've got my RV up for sale, with a couple people dickering to buy it. If that happens, I'm back to towing with my Montero, which is getting a little long in the tooth for such an long trip.
In any event, this opens up space for another boat to take my place at the marinas in Sausalito, Petaluma, and Oakland. _________________ Mike - Sealife |

Sorry Mike for all your scheduling challenges. Keep us posted on what you finally decide. I guess I will not be able to make my special award to you this time. |

uhhhh...we could never expect to replace Mike, but if the possibility exists to take a trip north and explore the delta...well, let me know if the spot is available.

Dear All:
The 4th Annual Delta and Bay Extravaganza is now officially less than one month away. This weekend we are putting two new Optima batteries in M/V Pounder to get ready for the trip as our batteries are now over four years old.
After watching a bunch of Discovery Channel stuff on crabbing in Alaska, we finally broke down and purchased two Immersion (Survival) Suits for me and Kath (not that I think we would ever need them). I told Kath that we could try these “Gumby” suits on at home and dance around the living room! We might find these suits useful when we are out on the West side of Catalina Island with our single engine vessel, or maybe out the Golden Gate somewhere.
Thanks for all the food volunteers. This was an excellent response. As a recap the following will be provided for our Thursday morning, May 18th, breakfast:
1. Coffee- Fishtales (Roger I still need to talk to John about the coffee pot)
2. Orange Juice- SEA3PO
3. Pastries- Islander
4. Fruit Bowl- Discovery
5. Hash Brown Potatoes; and Bread, Butter, and Jam- Dora Jean.
Dinner reservations have now been made at the Sausalito Yacht Club for between 6:00 and 6:30 PM, for dinner Friday night, May 19th. We are looking forward to an enjoyable evening and view of the Bay. |

Hey Jim, careful, next thing you know you'll need a real, self-inflating "life raft"!! I know just how to strap it down on the bow and know someone who wants to sell his... _________________ Steve & Carmen

I am starting to get serious about planning for this trip - should be fun!
As a kayaker in addition to C-Dory owner I want to let every one know about a kayaking event at Jack London Square on Saturday.
I am not sure when people will be heading to Jack London marina but there will be many kayakers participating in a breast cancer fund raising even from 8am until about 2 to 3pm. I am just guessing but there could be more than 100 kayakers on the water.
If our slips are at the docks on the north end that is where most of the kayakers will be launching and returning. The entrance to that area could be crowded with kayaks.
If our slips are at the docks further south we will only need to be aware of lots of kayakers in the estuary.
The most crowded times will be when they launch and start from 8am to 10am and when they return probably from 12 to 2pm.
I don't think this will be any problem for us but thought I should get the word out.

Just got the word on my anticipated Alaska fishing trip......not going to happen this year.....bummer. So, I'm clear to make the Delta trip in a limited fashion. I still have to be back to Channel islands Harbor on Saturday, the 20th, as the official photographer for the Annual Safe Boating Day activities, involving the Coast Guard, Harbor Department, Ventura Fire and County Sheriff rescue squads, etc.. I'm therefore planning on trailering up with Fishtales on Monday, 5/15 and returning to L.A. on Thursday, 5/18, from the Duck Club. I won't be able to do the SF bay part of the trip this year, so if there is another boat that wants to take my place, they are welcome to it. Se y'all in Rio Vista!! |

Jim,
Can you tell us the location of the duck club? I would like to plot it on my chart.
I am thinking about participating in the kayak benefit. That means that I would be leaving Sausalito early and get to Jack London before 8am.
