bunk carpeting

This is probably a silly idea, and hopefully someone will say so, if so - we need to recarpet our bunks (and we've looked at synthetic, etc.), so what if you used marine grade carpeting, and just used strips on the top, like 1/4 inch from each side of the board, and glued it down. hmm, maybe the carpet would abrade and unravel on the edges? And if you ever needed to replace the carpet, it would be tugh getting it off. On the other hand, it shouldn't degrade as quickly because water would leach out of it faster?

Anyway, I am suspicious of wood bunks that are totally wrapped in carpet in terms of water retention, wood rot, etc. Where we are, nothing ever dries out Smile

A few months ago we were leaning toward starboard or other synthetic options, but the more I've thought about it, it seems nothing like carpet on the top would seem to have that "give" that a person might want in order to protect the boat, instead of a hard surface. But then, carpet also retains grit, and sea creatures, etc.

We have used indoor/outdoor carpet on our trailers. Monel metal staples are far better than SS which will rust.

We have used slicks on some of our boats--mostly on the forward 1/3 of the bunks and the target bunk.

On our boat lift we have 20 year old Astro Turf on the bunks. It has worn very well--had many more on and offs, but the bunks are well below the boat when it is moved.

I have redone bunks and carpets on 2 trailers, both Pacific. They have Douglas fir bunks, and the carpet is top and sides, and I believe Monel staples. No rust, and no rot. I didn't need to do the first one, only 5-6 years old, but it needed new carpet so I did the whole thing. On the second I lowered the bunks about 3 inches, (and that was really a worthwhile project), and since I was that far into it I re-carpeted at the same time. Used the same bunks though.

I don't like the idea of hard stuff next to the boat skin, so carpet works for me. I do hose the bunks after every launch, and have not had scratches on the boat bottom from foreign matter there.
