taylor, It will always work better IF you have the money in hand. The good ones go fast, sometimes minutes to hours from posting, so now that you are well prepared, your chances are improved. Money in hand. Call and set up a "holding fee" to get money to owner, and you a chance to put hands and eyes on the boat. Then arrange the survey, (mechanical and marine) and the sea trial and if they all meet expectations then the real money changes hands. Your "On Hold" deposit should be refundable IF something in the survey or sea trial goes south, but at least that gets you first in line to see, feel and try.

Best of luck and remember, sometimes the right boat is not in the next block, county or even state, so keep looking and be willing to travel.

I have money in hand, in fact I would be able to get it to him faster then the check he wanted me to mail. He wanted $28,000 with no electric method to pay. I was bringing 28k cash 870 miles he told me get the cash and come get the boat, I pull the cash and someone mailed him $1,000 to hold it. So it was my boat Friday, he put a new add Saturday, Monday when Iím driving 12 hours to give him cash itís sold. I wouldnít expect anyone to do anyone that way. Especially after listening to some 90 year old mans dumb ass stories for 4 days while he ďcleanedĒ up the boat to get ready for me to get.

First one to put money on the table gets it. When I've sold things on-line I've had plenty of people say "Please hold [item], I'll be there at [X] with $[Y]." and then never have them show up. So now I tell people "First one here with cash wins."

Still have to put with a lot of BS messages though. Often I find it's not worth the hassle to sell something on-line unless it's worth a lot of money.

So you schedule to have someone drive 12 hours the first of December, then tell him someone else is offering to put a deposit, and when the person says Iíll be there with in a week, you would take a mail in check for $1,000 from the other person? I do a ton of online sales Iíd never do that. The original agreement stands regardless of who else calls.

If the person only excepts checks or cash and no electronic pay, no written messages and lives 12 hours away do you risk the check or drive out and see?

What happened to you is unfortunate and frustrating. One of my friends missed out on a couple C-Dorys in a similar fashion. He finally found one.

When I sell items including a few C-Dorys over the years, I always stick with the person who I go with first. If another contacts and tells me they have a better deal, then they get in line. It has always worked out because I am up-front with the person and I keep my word. That makes it fair and a win-win. It's too bad the seller didn't keep their word with you.

Another boat will come up and it will be the right fit for you.

Probably because of experience with too many buyers who don't keep their word.

Iíll keep shopping heís a tool I asked him to check out a few things like if the downriggers were electric and the condition of the tires. He told me on Friday itís my boat, then posted Saturday morning on CL new tires and electric downriggers send me an offer. Dude is scum and might be a scam. In the mean time he put me out having me liquidate to get cash as that all he excepted.

Taylor 23 that is most unethical of the seller, and I share your anger. When I bought "Thataway" I was already leaving with cashier's check and cash to pick up the boat. The seller called me and someone was gong to offer $5,000 more, was nearby and wanted to look at the boat that day. I told the seller, that I would meet the increased price, only if the boat was 100% as represented. But I was on the way, and it would take about 36 hours to get there. As it turned out, there were some minor issues, and we came to a compromise.

When I sold "Thataway". The first person who called was a known C Brat. I took his word and didn't require a deposit. However if it had not been a known person, I would have had a 10% deposit wired to my bank.

I am not sure that even a wired deposit would have saved your sale. Be assured that the world has mostly honest people, along with those scum bags. Another boat will come along, but.....Karma.
