Question for our Canadian friends? Does Canada accept a medical exemption to the vaccine for border crossing at this time? Due to health issues, a close family member has been advised to absolutely not get vaccinated and has a medical exemption from two doctors. I have not yet contacted CBSA but am wondering what others may have heard. Thanks, Ken

I would say no at this time. With mandatory vaccinations still being worked on for government workers I can’t see an exemption being granted yet except with ministerial approval, so unless they know Justin Trudeau and paid one of his family for a speaking engagement I wouldn’t say it is going to happen.

After some study of the CBSA rules, it appears there is some allowance for medical exemptions to vaccination, however it does not allow any exemption for non discretionary travel such as ours would be. Thank you for the reply. Ken

Yeah, it’s tough. Within country travel by plane is severely restricted. It’s different world for now at least

Hi Ken,

I know the Coho (Black Ball ferry) from Port Angeles to Victoria has restarted service after 19 months off. For travel there, going into Canada, I know US citizens have to have a negative PCR test from within 72 hours prior to entry into Canada (ie, crossing the border not stepping foot on Canadian soil. That availability in Port Angeles is limited and runs about $175.oo. If your return is within 24 hours you do not have to have a new test.

Here's the link to the Coho site with the Covid travel regs.

https://www.cohoferry.com/covid-19-requirements

There is a bit in here that is confusing but this is from the Canada site:

Quote:
"As of August 9, 2021, U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents can travel for a non-essential purpose if they have proof that they are fully vaccinated. U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are not fully vaccinated continue to be required to be travelling for a non-essential purpose.
As of September 7, 2021, all other foreign nationals can travel for a non-essential purpose if they have proof that they are fully vaccinated. Foreign nationals who are not fully vaccinated will continue to be required to meet an exemption or be travelling for a non-essential purpose."

I certainly would not plan a date based on heresay and would go directly to the CBSA. The requirements are changing quickly and my feeling from what I have heard is that only fully vaccinated people with a negative covid test within 72 hours are allowed to come in. But, by the time I hit submit this might have changed.

Good news from Waggoner:

Canada Border Covid-19 Requirements Ending?

The latest news indicates that Canadian government sources have confirmed that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has agreed to let a cabinet order, that mandates Covid-19 vaccination requirements to cross the Canadian border, expire at the end of September 2022. The cabinet order that requires international travelers to be vaccinated against Covid-19 was put in place a year ago and subsequently renewed about every three months. The latest version of the order will expire September 30 and is expected not to be renewed.

The expired order would also end random Covid-19 testing for those who are vaccinated, and mandatory testing for unvaccinated international travelers. Letting the order expire would eliminate the mandatory component of the ArriveCAN app.

The ArriveCAN app was created by Canada’s Public Health Agency for travelers to provide vaccination and travel information. The app has since morphed into a digitized border arrival tool for Customs and Immigration as an alternative to using the paper version. With the anticipated Covid-19 cabinet order expiring on September 30, ArriveCAN app may become an optional tool instead of a mandatory tool.

The Canadian federal government is still deciding whether to maintain the requirement for passengers to wear face masks on trains and airplanes, which is not contained in the same cabinet order. This particular mask mandate order was given by the Minister of Transport.

Thanks Ken. Many U.S. boaters have been waiting and anticipating the ease of travel restriction to Canada due to Covid-19. Fuel tanks are filled and ready to make that crossing as early as October 1st! Smile
