some poor sap at the busy boat ramp this morning was having hell getting his boat launched. He took off steaming up the boat ramp with his boat somehow still barely hooked to the trailer. with enough yelling from the spectators he got it reined in before it started up the pavement......it could be worse, he could be captaining a ginormass container ship through the Suez Canal, now there's a major league screw up

No doubt that it's a serious issue and will likely result in many millions of dollars to clear the canal and keep lawyers busy, it has it's funny side for some reason.... to that end it has spawned many internet memes... . Very Happy

The ship was caught in a sandstorm with heavy winds. I have seen a number of ships in canals blown to the side with heavy winds in narrow canals, and grounded. Not so much of a screw up, as it would probably be wise if there was a second parallel Canal, as now exists in Panama, or the first few miles of the Suez from the Med. The ship had 2 very experienceed pilot on board. But there is some question that the helmsman didn't react, could not react, or the steering could not react fast enough. Also I suspect he bow thrusters were utilized when they first realized that there was an issue. The over use might lead to issues. This is also an exceptionally large ship: she is one of the 400 meter ships, although not the "largest by container measurement" she is the class by LOA.

Her dimensions: 399.94 metres (1,312 ft 2 in),[3 Long] it is one of the longest ships in service. Its hull has a beam of 58.8 metres (192 ft 11 in), a depth of 32.9 metres (107 ft 11 in), and a fully laden draft of 14.5 metres (47 ft 7 in)

G captain has a lot of very good material about the salvage operation. Smit Salvage (best in the World is in charge of salvage. Two more 220 and 240 Ton bollard pull tugs will arrive tomorrow. There is a suction dredge removing sand from around the bow at the rate of 2000 cubic meters of material an hour! This is working not he bow. But there appears to be some leakage of water into the bow thruster rooms, and high capacity pumps are being put aboard to remove this water, and the ballast water, which should allow the ship to be freed sooner.

The tide in this area ranges form 5 to 7 feet. One factor we don't often consider is tat now this ship is being supported on the bow and stern on the sand, and the center is not as well supported as the tide goes out. This will cause flexing of the hull (as the ship is designed to), but it is the same flexing, instead of random flexing as happens in the ocean.

The ship was going 13 knots when she the bow went aground. The momentum of the ship with the sudden stop of the bow, swung the stern into the opposite side of the canal.

It will be interesting to see how long this takes. Meanwhile millions of dollars a day/ probably an hour, are tied up with running these waiting ships--now over 300, and those which have been re-routed around the cape of Good Hope--adding thousands of miles to the voyage.

Interestingly, these large container ships pay something like $500,000 for one transit thru the canal. A C-Dory would cost $880.

The Suez Canal transit costs are variable depending on agent and "port clearance fees". Recently (March. 1 2021) the North Bound Port Clearance Fee (Red Sea to Med) has been increased from $60 to $935 (Noon Site), The South bound is $260 port clearance fee. The Canal fee per measured ton is $8.50. A C Dory 25 would probably come in at about 5 tons measured.

The Ever Given's Gross Tonnage is given as 224,000 tons (it is not clear if this is the Suez Canal measurement or not) x $8.50. Would be $1,904,000--nearly two million dollars, if you include agent and other port fees for this size of ship.

When we last did the Panama Canal (1996)it was about $300 for a vessel measured at 15 Tons (this is not equal to the weight of the vessel, it is a calculated volume of net cargo space.) Today it would be about $2,000 for that same boat. The boat we took to Europe and back from Calif. was 62' LOA and would have been over $3000 today, and was in the $300 range back in 1983 and 86. If you have to rent lines, fenders or crew (4 line handlers are necessary) then the fees would have been more. We had the required 4 200' lines and crew already arranged.

I was reading that on of the lasting effect of this event will be a shortage of containers. All the container on this ship and the thousands on the hundreds of waiting ships are all scheduled to be other places and loaded with other goods that have no place to go now and no way to get there. This is a really interesting event. It just goes to show the increasingly complex shipping and inventor on depend world we live in. Many factory workers could end up laid off as there is no place to store their freshly made goods before they ship. Crops need to be harvested on time to be processed on time to be shipped on time. They can not just sit in the fields waiting to be picked, cut etc. They should rename the ship the kraken as its tentacles are going to effect a lot of people if its not cleared soon.

Not sure why this would cause a shortage of containers. I read that there was recently such a glut of containers that it was not worth the cost to ship them back to Asia to be refilled (not nearly as many filled containers go west to east as east to west). You can see a number of places in the US where there are large container storage yards to hold the empties.

You are both correct. There is a glut of containers in the USA and other "destinations" and a shortage in the East where the massive number of consumer products are produced.

Part of this crisis, and it related to the medical supply chain of masks, ventilators, swabs etc is the "Just in time" utilization of materials. You don't warehouse, you have the item (chip, swap, piston ring etc) arrive just when you need it...A delay, shortage or storage interrupts this "just in time"--and shut down occurs. SUV's and Trucks for instance because of chip shortages currently.

AS of about 1030 PM PDT the aft end of the Ever Given is afloat. Engines are now running and they are expecting to use some of the ships own power to get the bow "off" the bank.

It will be really interesting to follow the investigation on cause.

I have a friend who used to work for a steel company that shipped worldwide.
He recounted a business associate who lived near Houston who would go to
Panama and help clear his ships thru when there was a crowding jam up, delays,
local politics, favoritism, etc that was costing his company big money daily due
to the delay. The clearing method was cash, lots of it (6 figures, 'payola', 'dinero',
'plata') to get priority for the canal passage. "Standard business practice" I was
told.

I can only image...

Then again it's not a mystery wherever big money is, that's where you'll find the
most graft, bribery, theft, ruthlessness; big business, banks, government, etc.

Asked "Why do you rob banks?", Clyde Barrow (of Bonnie & Clyde, circa 1934)
answered "Because that's where the money is."

Aye.

I used to work for a UK company. In the 90's there was a big scandal where the company was caught giving big bribes to officials in the country where they won a $billions contract. Apparently laws in the UK prohibit UK companies from using bribery anywhere as a business tool. The company's response was "That is how business is done in that part of the world. If we want to be competitive we have to do the same things other companies do."

Brought up in the US, I was taught "Tell the truth, do the right thing, pay your
taxes, serve your country, be kind (oops...), follow the Ten Commandments".
After getting around and seeing what was actually happening, I suddenly felt,
without 'machismo', I'd be "the nice guy who finished last". Felt the same in
my first 'dog eats dog' business. So, I got out.

In the real world, I found out it's just the opposite of 'dog eats dog'.

So, the world turns and we're here for only a little time.

Aye.
