Thanks for the interesting history. That must be one of the few coal fired boiler ships still operating in US and Canadian waters! The second ship apparently has not been run since the 1970's...It would seem like a huge project to get her running and certified again.. Maybe large enough to allow social distancing and still take a nice trip on the Great Lakes. _________________ Bob Austin

On our 2017 Great Loop, on August 9, our anchorage was on Pere Marquette Lake at Ludington, MI. The first picture below is the screenshot of the location of our anchorage, it was right below Buttersville Park, a park that had Pere Marquette Lake on one side and Lake Michigan on the other side. This spot is directly across Pere Marquette Lake from where the SS Badger and the SS Spartan were tied up (thanks to our own ssobol for a comment on our blog post to identify the ship in our photo). Notice the piles of ashes on the shore! This was a very cool spot. Here is the blog post for Ludington, and the following post is our weather day in Ludington, where we met fellow Loopers from Duncan, B.C. on Brave Heart, with whom we spent a very pleasant evening!

For a long time, they used to dump the coal ash into the lake during the crossings. Then people started complaining... |

I took the Badger across the lake a few years ago. Nice trip. When I went down to get my car, I saw that a Mazda Miata road rally had made the crossing part of their get together. Dozens of Miatas. Given their size, I’m guessing that trip set a record for number of cars carried by the ship! _________________ Tom Parrent

The joy of a Badger crossing is hard to explain and impossible to forget. |
