Did a test run with the tug. Liked it a lot but for most fishermen it isn't too practical. Went with the 22. If you have any weather come in only one person can really be comfortable in the tug.

The Tug is a very nice looking boat. A lot of comfort inside. Cosmetically, pristine to the C-Dory. That being said, the C-Dory is only about 1/3 the cost comparing new to new. That additional cost can buy a lot of other stuff. Have you ridden in both boats? That might be a good thing to do before dropping change on either of them. Just my two cents.

Got to take a ride in a 21 ranger, and i loved that boat. I still do. The diesel, the aesthetics, it’s just a FUN boat to dink around in. I bought a c dory. Towable expedition boat: “what could be more fun than that!?” I asked myself. Nothing.

Nothing for me! What do you want to do on your boat?

Some folks may not have read the question...this is about the Ranger 21 tug. low freeboard, large cockpit, with motor box in the center, and a very small cabin. Pretty spartan, even compared to the C Dory 22.

I consider the Ranger Tug 21 a "harbor cruiser"--sure they do work for short trips, and I believe one has done the inland passage to AK

The tug is a semi displacement vessel--The C Dory is a planing vessel. 6 to 8 knots vs 25 cruising speed.

Rough water: Take the C Dory any time. Dinette? Tug none. Galley, minimal in the tug--. C Dory, full cruising boat.

They are different boats designed for different purposes.

Ok fine....the Fleming 78 wasn't on the list, doubt many people even know what that one is anyway. The 21 Ranger gives up way too much practicality to be about the cutest boat on the water - which it is by the way in my opinion. The CD 22 is fast and economical. The Tug? It's so slow you better hire someone to manage your estate while you're gone. Seaworthy? The CD 22 checks that box too. No way I would want to be in big stuff in the 21 Ranger. When I think of our CD 22 cruisers, I think they do pretty much everything pretty well for a reasonable amount of money and you can 't say that about many boats.

The 21 is more of a toy boat in my eyes. It might work well for a daytime salmon troller or a sunset booze cruiser, but nowhere near as versatile as the 22 c-dory.

Now if we're talking about the 23 r-tug with outboard power, that's a boat that checks a lot of boxes and I would seriously consider. If money was no object, of course!

In my earlier response I believe I was thinking of the Ranger Tug 23. I know for a fact that one with an outboard can run upwards of 30 kts. I know because Mystery Girl could outrun Midnight Flyer! Embarassed

I have been infatuated with the R21 for years, but I believe the CD22 is a wiser choice. It has more room, better rough water capabilities, and engines that are easier and less expensive to maintain or repair.

The Ranger 21 'Tug" had its origins about 63 years ago. That is why Ranger celebrated its "60th Anniversary" in 2018. The stern lines were changed, and the interior of the pilot house were changed...some different set ups in the cockpit, but essentially the same boat.

Ranger 21 and Ranger 23 are completely different boats. The 23 is more comparable to a CD22 than a 21, but there are still great differences.

Yep, I seen that one listed, and all the others too.
I'm steering toward the codify just cuz a top speed of 8 knots is knot enough.
Outboard over in board seems a plus too
Thanks , for everyone's comments, always appreciated,.
And who knows, maybe I'll be a Brat soon :0)
