The '06 Honda 135 that came with the boat was troublesome and finally died. Marina where I store the boat over the summer (FL) suggests a Mercury 150 or 115 CT. Would the 115 hp be enough power for max speeds of 20-25 mph?? Do the new Mercs perform well? Alternatives?

The several 22 owners who have the Merc's 90 to 115 seem to like them. There are multiple choices for this boat, since it is rated up to 150 hp. You have to look at service, costs (re-rigging to Merc is may be more expensive than staying with Honda). All modern outboards are good. E-Tec is no longer boing to be made, but supposedly parts will be available.

The original twin Yamaha 50's on my 23 would push the boat to around 30 mph at WOT. Most efficient cruise was around 4200-4400 RPM which produced a speed of about 22-24 MPH.

When I repowered with twin 70's, WOT speed increased to around 35 MPH. Best cruise remained about the same, but somewhat surprisingly, mileage improved slightly with the bigger engines.

I think 115 hp will push the boat to more than 25 mph. A lot depends on load and propping.

I had a 2007 Mercury 115 Hp EFI 4-Stroke on Midnight Flyer. I very much liked the engine. It seemed to run well. My top speed was pushing 31-32 mph. Loaded heavily and probably with bottom barnacles, during my Alaska trip, my top speed was only about 26-27 mph. I don't know what the differences are between the 22 and 23, other than the size. I suspect the newer Mercs are even better. Colby

I had/have corrosion problems with my Honda. For that very reason I would get a Yamaha because they have a sweet wash down system that washes down the entire engine without the thermostats having to be open. I don't know about the other brands.

I'd opt for the 150 if I were in your shoes. You don't have to use all 150 hp all the time as you are well aware, but it is at least there for when you need it with heavy loads or just enjoy going fast every now and then. The merc 150 isn't very heavy at all coming in at 455 pounds, but I know the 115 merc weights about 100 pounds less. Your question is a very good one - hard to say which one is better really. Better for what is probably a good question speaking of questions.....lol.....

I wouldn't worry about 100 pounds of weight. That's little less than 16 gallons of gas in weight. I can't tell any difference in performance or boat handling after burning 16 gallons of fuel. Get the motor you want and don't spend a bunch of time worrying about weight. Just a thought.

I completely agree that 100 pounds isn't much of a concern. Lighter is lighter though....I really load my 22 to the point of ridiculousness and it still does fine.

Hi Pat,
I have a 2018 Venture 23 with a 115 Yamaha. With the boat loaded for cruising and fishing, two adults (and a wee dog) on board I can go over 30 mph at WOT. That hp is fine for our use and saves over 100 lbs compared to a Yamaha 150. It just depends how fast you want to go.

Happy Thanksboating!

I’m running a Suzuki 150 on my 2008 23 Venture. I personally wouldn’t put less than a 150 on that hull if you really want all the flexibility that it offers.
You’ll have a lightly loaded top speed of up to 40-42mph and a great cruise speed of 22-25 mph at 3800rpm and get 4mpg all day.

Mercury 115 CT is a2.1 liter eng WOT about 32-34 mph At 4000 rpm about 20 mph 4 mpg Weight is about 360 lb It has the same lower unit as the 150 Hp so up to 30 mph it’s very similar to the 150 The 150 will shine at top end over 40 mph if you can find calm waters.
