I'm gonna ask: Why is the water so low? I truly don't know and have never been there.

They release 8.24 maf to Lake Mead that and combined with the drought the lake has been going down. In 2005 it reached its lowest level since filling of 3555 and it is at 3560 as of today. It is doing what it was put there for storing water during the good years so it can be used in the bad ones. The snow pack was really bad this year and the lake will not see an increase this year. It is going set a new low record.

The release to Lake Mead is not going to keep that lake from going down either.

Many folks here in the Colorado Basin view that between leakage and evaporation that Lake Powell is doomed. The river running folks hate the dam and the environmentalists want it down also. The Hydro power was never intended to be a major item profit center, this lake is a safety device is supposed to regulate the river flows, protect from floods, and that is about all. the dam over topped not that long ago, they used plywood to raise the top of the dam, it was going to be a mess. The emergency overflow tunnels failed, they were going to collapse with much more water flow. The could open the gates, drain the Lake and only use the dam for emergency and downstream can take all the water that would flow through and then some. This is what happen when the Pork Barrel rolls over Common Sense. See ya, Bob in Nevada and we can live without the water we take, but is sure is handy. Arizona is gonna suck rocks this year for sure, they will be cut off within a month or two of most of their allotment.

There is no drain in Lake Powell the bypass tunnel was filled with concrete and the other half was used for the spillway. Lake Mead would have been empty twice if it wasn’t for Lake Powell. The drainers simply don’t want to honor their agreements. I think we should start looking building the last two dams. The only way those two lakes will fill again is to stop the mandatory releases from them and stop issuing building permits for the region. California does feed a lot of people with that water.

They should also only let them grow crops that are more adapted to dry climates. For instance, growing almonds in a desert is a stupid idea because almond cultivation is very water intensive.
