Question for the hive. How under-powered is a 22' Cruiser with a 50 HP Honda?

This question has been raised a number of times. There were some 22's which were initially powered with 50 hp. Generally most folks with these boats run at displacement speeds (less than 8 knots) or carry light loads and can plane in the 12 to 15 mph range.

The 50 is underpowered in my opinion, for what I want the boat to do. I want to be able to comfortably cruise in the 17 to 25 mph range depending on load and conditions. That requires about 90 hp.

My 80hp 22 Cruiser is happy @ 14-15 knots @ 4,400 rpm. This about the minimum hp a loaded 22 can plane with without complaint.
The 50hp motor is not enough to crawl up on top of the bow wave to plane.
In real life a 20hp motor will achieve the same 6 knot cruise a 50 will.
Over 15-20 hp and under 75-80 hp is useless and a waste of fuel.

In my humble and unbiased opinion.

I don't know how you guys can get even 3, maybe a maximum of 4 horses in your 22's! I really don't see how I can even stuff that many mini ponies in mine! Razz

I was able to get four full sized bison in the back of my Ford Focus Station Wagon, So I think I could at least do the same in my C-Dory. Mind you the bison were in boxes, on the way home from the butcher.

I agree 50 hp for a CD 22 is not enough.

An idea just struck me Idea Why not consider the Mfg recommendations?

The Mfg usually has qualified people to research and test their power/boat
match. Why (on Earth) would anyone less in-the-know think they would
be better off ignoring such advice and take unknown blogger's input to the
contrary?

Granted the Mfg posts max HP for a given boat. Reason (Immanual Kant's
imperative) dictates somewhere around 20% less may work.

Why waste time/money going on a hunch or asking unknowns their advice?

Just asking.

Aye.
