We are purchasing a C-Dory in Portland OR and we’re hoping to have the bottom paint redone there before bringing the boat north. I’m hoping to harvest some of your well-earned wisdom. I’m need recommendations (both yay or nay) for and outfit in Portland to do the work. Can you help me out?

Thanks!

Scooner Creek Boat Works in Portland did excellent gel-coat repair for us in the past. They also do bottom paint. They are very professional, friendly and do good work.

For electrical or electronics in the Portland area go to Rodger's Marine Electronics, 503-287-1101. Great folks and good help - know what they are doing.

Harvey, no present need for electronics (knock wood!). The boat will be headed up to Washington / Whidbey Island so I’ll need some additional recommendations sometime soon.

In the meantime any more suggestions for bottom painters in the Portland area?

I took my boat up to Bitter End Boat Works in Bellingham for bottom paint. Jessie did a very good job, easy to work with, and (as far as I can tell for now) looks good. I asked for an increase in depth for the waterline and a bit of a tip up on the nose. Think it works.

Maybe we will see you on the water.

Thanks Harvey. I’ll make note of that. Right now logistics dictate that this work be done in Portland 😐

MHA, if you do go with Schooner Creek for bottom paint, you better call them soon to schedule the work. Before this Corona-19 Virus, they were quite busy and work had to be scheduled in advance. Worth the wait though!

I second Harvey's recommendation for electronic work with Rodger's Marine Electronics. They are the best on the west coast for boating electronics and systems design in my opinion! Their follow-up for warranty work and trouble shooting for any problems you may have down the road are second to none.

Check with Bob and Betsy Burke from OR.
Long time C-Dory folks and his business prior to his retirement would put him in the know of other business in his area. They just sold C-Pearl to a FL owner I believe but he knows a lot of folks. Great couple
On the logistics it will need to be cleaned up/re-done from time to time so someone who is close to your intended use area may work better for the long haul.. no pun intended. But, I realize the multi state moves and just getting something completed to keep the gig rolling. Best of luck and enjoy your boat

Thanks Byrdman. I certainly appreciate all the advice shared by the C-Brats. The boat is now scheduled for bottom paint at Schooner Creek.

There is another dimension to my puzzle for me to share. Our plan for the boat is for it to spend the season on a buoy and the remainder of the year in the garage. We currently we don’t have a vehicle capable of towing 4800#. And since the ‘plan’ is only to move it (not yet officially a ‘her’) twice a year it’s hard to justify another vehicle solely for that purpose. If I can get away with it I’d like to use a truck from U-Haul. We have a nice boat ramp nearby and I can schedule my ins and outs to optimize tides and weather conditions.

Comments? Suggestions? Therapy referrals?

MHA welcome to the group. Michelle and I are new as well and in Clinton. There are a few of us in the South Whidbey area. I think your idea of renting a tow vehicle and bringing it to your buoy is great. Once you see how much you really want to pull it in and out you can decide on if a tow vehicle is necessary. See you out there.

I had a lot of work done on my C-Dory 25 at Schooner Creek. They are very good. Not cheap, but good.

My current boat had bottom paint done by Sells Marine. They do a good job and are reasonably priced. However they operate out of a floating shop and don't generally work on trailerable boats to my knowledge. Worth a call to them though.

I also know a lot of people who go to Rocky Pointe Marina and are very happy with their service. I have no personal experience.

You also have Multnomah Yacht Repair as an option. My experience with them is that they are my Yanmar parts dealer, but they also do major mechanical and fiberglass work in addition to bottom paint.

Thanks for the information Rob. I’ve already committed to Schooner Creek. I too have heard that they are on the pricey side. Given that I know little about bottom painting and preparation I guess I’ll have to mentally write off the premium I’m paying for the confidence that the job will be done correctly, and that I won’t be paying for the undoing of a poor job later on (?)

So,,, nothing in this about a trailer that I see. Understand the no tow rig at this time but trailer is very important part of a tow "rig" package. Does the 4800# boat have a trailer? If so, when was it last repaired/used/condition of tires/hubs/breaks?
Or I may have needed more or less coffee and missed it or blew past it.
Trailer info please.
