I’ve contacted Isle Royal NP about them reopening. I was
told that at the time one may fish or cruise in the park with a permit from the park service. The docks are closed at this time but one may anchor out. The marina that I normally launch from in Grand Portage Minnesota says that their launch is open now and they plan to open more on June 29.
It’s not official but Rock Harbor store and fuel services should open July 1. Limited hours and limited supplies. Some or all of the docks may open at that time.
We plan on going to Grand Portage on June 29th and spend a couple weeks fishing and cruising our way around the Island. No better way to do physical distancing! It will be a little different this year but it’s always an adventure. _________________ Tom and Joyce Schulke

I'd love to join you, however with all our other changes to our planned travels from the Pandemic and closings, the schedule won't allow it. Several new trips planned with Rosanne around her schedule, plus getting a bimini for C-Traveler. Have fun with the Lake Trout! Glad that Isle Royale is opening back up! I suspect it'll be a lot more remote this year! |

Ah, Tom! it is tempting if for nothing else than to get away from all the wild fires around here. I thought there would be no Isle Royal this year until your post today june 23rd. Too little time to prepare and travel plus my trailer is incapacitated and under major remodeling. Good fishing, Alain |

Colby and Alain
Sorry you can’t make it this year. Ill have to do all the fishing myself. Can’t do everything and it’s been quite an interesting year. Just found out today the docks will be opening on June 26. Will be a real wilderness experience this year. I spent the afternoon rigging my rods for lake trout and salmon. Also have my Mepps #5 for pike. I’ve filleted a few nice pike this year already.
Hopefully we will have other boats along next year...be safe.

Tom & Joyce,
As you may know, Phyllis retired on Nov. 1st last year so we're not at the island. We're catching up on 18 years of deferred maintenance on the house and yard this summer so I won't be joining you. Feel free to stop by our house in Houghton before or after the trip for a socially distanced (ugh) visit. Island should be pretty lonesome this year but that's one attribute of wilderness.
Enjoy, Jay |

Tom,
We don't swim until the water is 80 degrees.
Please let us know when that happens, and we'll travel right up there!
We assume all the 5 star marinas have 30 or 50A shore power and heated pools.
Enjoy! 31 Flavors of Cruising...

I did hear that Phyllis retired....congratulations! I’ll be your way in Late July and early August over at “Camp Clow”. Will contact you then. Hopefully your work list will be shorter by then. I’m hoping the fishing will be just as good as last year.
John
Who said anything about swimming? I tried once and almost had the “big one”! You would love all the great hiking trails and wildlife. I can’t promise any marinas at all this year and you would have to bring a generator if you want power. I will however, if you show up keep you in a healthy diet of fresh Lake Trout. High in Omega 3. 🐟🐟🐟
Got my permit today .....Tom |

Tom,
I need to visit Camp Clow. Let me know when you'll be there and I'll come over for a visit; that way you won't have to divert to Houghton which is really not on the way; unless of course you want to visit here, I would love to have you visit. Good luck with the fishing; I don't have any reports on it this year but one always catches some somewhere around the island.

I’ll contact you when I return from Isle Royal so that we can get together one way or the other. Meanwhile get as many projects finished as you can. My big project is going to be to fill the boat freezer with fish for “Camp Clow”. We were quite successful last year and if we do half as well this year it shows be no problem.

I’ve been boating at the island for 30 plus years and believe I’ve seen the Sea Otter around? Should be real quiet this year by the sound of things take care happy cruising Joe |

Hi Joe
Planning on crossing over from Grand Portage tomorrow. Weather permitting we will go to Windigo first then to McCargo cove. This is our fifth trip and plan to be out 3 weeks. We fish around the island and are seldom in a hurry. Give us a shout on 16. Mornings are best as that’s when we fish. It would be fun to get together. Looking forward to meeting you.

Hi Tom,
Sorry I am not going to make it to Isle Royal with you guys this year. Sure going to miss those lake trout for supper every night. My plans are still to head west to Yellowstone Lake in August and on down to Lake Powell in September. You and Joyce stay safe and enjoy your cruise around the island.

Went backpacking/hiking/fishing on Isla Royale years ago.
First thing, saw a moose right next to Rock Harbor Lodge.
Swore it was chained to a tree. Going closer, it wasn't.
Wore new boots. Don't do that. Olympic size blisters.
Rented a small O/B, fished most of the day for lake trout, salmon: skunked.
Brought a small blow up raft and fished Lake Richie: 2 good pike for dinner.
Camped tip of some incredible gorgeous narrow peninsula w/"on-the-water
feeling. Falling asleep thought I heard aircraft engines overhead: nope, just
bugs. Must have been billions of them. Felt like a piece of meat up for grabs.
Have a good time.

Been three times. 1958, 61, 87. All three portaged canoe to Lake Richie, caught mountains of northern. Also with rented open wooden boats
And outboard trolled the cover of Lake Superior catching many lake trout.
From 1958 to 87 little change. Bet other than more pleasure boats little change now. Almost went recently when C-dory group went from Grand Maris.
Don’t know with Covid issue where Baxter our 23’ venture will go this year.
Had it out for test run on local lake. Probably Yellowtail Natl Rec In MT and Yellowstone Lake. We live in Sheridan, WY and usually do Puget Sound and
Up as far as we can into Canada. That is out for the year to CA.
Well enjoy IR and if you have time post pictures please.
Safe travels, Craig
