Pat,
I've used one of those Mr. Buddy heaters for 2 years, but only oassionally during Spring and Fall as our New England winters are too cold for much boating. They work great, especially while moving so the condensation is vented out. I never leave it running while sleeping. For a cheap ($80) and easy temporary solution, they are great. Get a CO alarm and you'll be all set w/ the window cracked.

I've been using my heater buddy in my 16 cruiser. It puts out more heat than I use, the low setting is fine. Home depot around $80. I actually read the instructions since my body is with-in reach of the of the bomb as is my 6 gallon fuel tank- how much room do you think is in a 16 footer! Anyway, It advises an 8" square opening allowing fresh air in to feed the O2. The water out-put is considerable and you will need the cabin boy or girl keep the wind shield clear. |

Yep, sure love our Mr Heater Portable Buddy. We have plenty of ventilation through the seams of the canvas on our boat, but it has O2 sensor and tip over switch. Works great. They are made for indoor use. Good idea to crack a window, though, just for extra safety. Remember to turn it up to high setting when first starting up, then after the ceramic glows orange, you can turn it down to low if desired. It sure takes the chill off and helps us defog the windows. Bottles of propane last a long time and there's NO SMELL.

Ok- I went out to Wal-Mart and purchased a Mr. Heater buddy for about 75$. It works very well. (for heat) Im able to bump around in the cabin with a t-shirt on in 20deg. weather. The one drawback is that it gives off a fair amount of moisture. It needs all windows cracked just a little bit to vent the steam. The floor stays cool despite the heater cranking. I still need to monitor the CO ppm. Its on my to do list.

I use a Coleman 3000 BTU Catalytic Heater that I added a computer 12 volt fan to. The fan draws very little current add does a good job of circulating the heat. The unit comes apart and folds up for compact storage. On a 16 you don’t have much extra room. With the camper back on and outside temperature in the lower 40’s, inside temperature is nice and comfortable. With the 16 oz canister it will run 7 hrs on high. No moisture buildup with the fan running, but with the 16 you don’t have an enclosed cab. I have photos of it in my Boat Projects album. They are near the end of the projects album. _________________ Dave

Dave-
Clever use of a simple heater in a limited space!
My only thought, since you're using this within the somewhat ventilated confines of the canvas which should vent the moisture and other benign exhaust gases, is to be sure the fan doesn't blow on the catalytic burner itself, which might lower the "combustion" temperatures enough to create some carbon monoxide.
Don't ya' just love those little useful computer fans?!?!?!!!

I sure do.
I have a couple 7” fans from an old server I had. I will make stands for them and use them for cooling in the summer.

As long as I keep the fan blowing on the back of the converter, I shouldn't have a problem.

Good work, Dave (all of it)! You got time to re-wire a CD25?
