| Thank you for this information Matt. I learned a lot in your presentation that I did not know before about fishing reels. I especially now even more appreciate my very old USA Penn reels that still work like new. Probably because of the use of Stainless Steel main gear, better materials and design when compared to the newer Penn reels made in China. Gary. |

Hi Matt
I use older Penn 113H reels, all made in USA for tarpon fishing. I buy the reels used on Ebay for a fraction of new reels, of which most are now made in Chiner (as Barney Frank used to say).
Tarpon fishing places the most demand on the reels and the drag system. I start with very tight drags to ensure the hook is pulled hard into the very hard mouth of the tarpon.
Last year I caught 45 tarpon, lost an unknown amount, plus numerous shark (accidentally). (I was top angler in our Tarpon Club).
I take them apart every year and I am diligent to especially inspect/change the drag washers.
I buy all of my parts from www.PennParts.com which is now rebranded as https://www.mysticparts.com/. Owned by the same people which I know from my previous residence in New Jersey. It’s a nice small business family owned by people who really care about their work and their customers.
The Penn 113H reels have a new, better drag washer system now. They now use HT100 washers. More washers, thinner, but better material.
The picture attached shows the old washer on the left and new washer on the right.

Thanks, I just loaded my old USA Penn Senator 3/0 that my friends with new reels were laughing at on the boat down here in Mexico, it has little use and should last a lifetime? Thanks for the parts links!

Don't know the age of the reel - but if old it's probably already lasted a lifetime for someone's fishing. Most of the old ones already have. Keep it lubed and clean and simply pass it on. BTW: you can update the washer system to carbons (or anything else you choose) when needed. Good luck getting them down there! |

| Capt. Mack: don't know if you know this, but the old house we were in at Hernando Beach (I'd been there off and on since 1962) was a WWI flounder fishery. As you look W from HB to the right of the channel is Centipede Bay (that whole flat) and huge ones were gigged there (especially just before they went offshore to spawn). Nice one you got on the gig (and the gig never backlashes or jams the level wind). |

I put this post up because as you saw I needed to update my Dad's 1944 Service reel since he didn't use the drag system at all and had removed the drag washers. This is what I did: went down to the hardware store and looked through the furniture (handle) parts for felt washers and then the lamp section (found the size for mine there) (the usual factory drag washer stacks were metal-leather-metal-leather or metal-felt or stainless- brass (or copper) arrangements. I chose felt because it soaks up grease and will keep everything else in there greased for a long time and greased, dissipates heat well. I could have done any of the above and could have ordered carbon sheets (or washers from the links in the description (movie above). You can do anything you want with these old reels to make them new again - as long as the result is a smooth drag. Smooth is the key.

Then I made another video on how to set the drag to line weight and be able to return to that weight when on the boat (and your buddy invariably messes with the drag - now you don't know what it's set to). Critical to know for trolling - because the speed of the boat, weight of the lure + poundage and speed of the fish will pop a line if not set right. Happens so fast many never realize why they lost the fish at all - they assume it was bigger than the line would hold (and of course we get a "one that got away" story). Basic: once you know the setting - use the rod to set it if on the boat (tie off to a rail - whatever).
