Wallas stove

I have a Wallas heater/stove 125 DU ?

the tank is half full, the stove was last fired in oct 2018 at EQ Harbor and worked fine. I do not know how old the fuel is.. as the boat was new to me.

I have not tried to start the stove due to lack of knowledge about the current fuel or new fuel.

Should I remove this fuel and add new fuel, or add 3 to 5 % 99% isopropyl alcohol?

Also, being as I do not know what the fuel is, would I burn this out before adding new fuel?

also, what do you use for fuel and where do you source it ?

Getting cold enough out that I would like to start the stove.

Your advice would be most appreciated.

I would start with new fuel. I’ve never added alcohol but I use mine a lot. We are onboard over 5 months a year.

Read the manual carefully and follow what it says.

Most but not all problems with Wallas stoves are operator error. How do I know? I’m an operator!

Have fun with yours. I wore the out the first one and am now on #2.

If we are using the Wallas regularly, we just use #2 diesel. (#1 is not as common, and is closer to Kerosene. Kerosene, Kleen Heat, and unseated Lamp oils are fractionations with less impurities. If we were just using the stove for a short time, we used Kleen Heat (from big box hardware stores). Kerosene can be obtained from many sources. #2 diesel at any pump and is the cheapest, but has more impurities. I liked to burn "Kleen Heat toward the end of a season.

Be sure and start the stove on "hI" and with voltage at least 12.6 volts. When turning off again run for 5 minutes on "hi" and be sure good voltage. Some folks run their outboard to get the voltage up. We have rarely found that to be necessary. The high voltage is necessary to get the glow plug to temperature and ignite the fuel.

We have had very good luck with the Wallas, and each time there was a minor problem it was fairly easily resolved. We did have fuel delivery problems on a couple of occasions. You can get a small air bubble in the delivery tube, and watch it progress up the clear tube to be sure the pump is running correctly.

There is also a learning cure on juggling pots. The burner to the left side (facing the stove) is the hottest, the other is always a bit cooler. The gasses that are produced by the hot fuel, are passed on to the second burner. Some stoves have equal fuel to both burners, but not so for the Wallas.

I would start with clean fuel--probably Kleen Heat, since you don't know what was used before.

Question for those of you who use it regularly: How much diesel odor do you get inside the cabin? I would say ours smells quite strongly. I don't know the age of the diesel. Perhaps I should replace it?

On my old 2001 era Wallas I used kerosene and got no smell. With my new 2018 two burner (old two burner ceramic top cracked and no replacement ceramics available as new one is slightly different dimensions) I use diesel and no smell and never spilled any diesel either - two seasons used. I think the newer one is a real improvement over the old one and in talking with Scan Marine, they said with the new one you can start and stop on any setting and all is good - the computer adjusts the on/off program for your setting. Maybe true, but old habits die hard and I still use the high setting on startup and shutdown.

I use KleenHeat exclusively, and no smell. I don't use the Wallas often, but when I do the engines are running, not just for the stove but because I am moving the boat. Also, always run in high 15 minutes after start and before shut down.

Don't be shy about calling Scan Marine 206-285-3675.

They are really - really helpful. I had not used my stove for a while and the pump gummed up. They had several suggestions and were ready to interpret what the flashing lights were saying.

They must get a lot of people pushing other fuels on the stoves because when I've talked to them they keep saying use diesel... diesel...diesel.

Hope all is going well for you and Penny. The 125 DU manual says Diesel or Kerosene. Many Wallas stoves are diesel only but some like mine are kerosene only. Mine is the 800T. I do use Kleen Heat in ours. We use ours a lot and often so the fuel does not get old. I recommend that people run the stoves at least once a month.

I do like it when folks mention their model number not just “Wallas”.

You’re right Scan Marine is a great resource and extremely helpful. They even gave me a discount on my replacement stove.

I did not see you sign up for the Hontoon gathering this year but hope to see you back in Florida.

These stoves demand high, clean voltage. A healthy battery, every single connection to and from the battery must be clean and tight. No corroded fuses or holders. The connection where the hot and negative leads hook to the stove sometimes need a squeeze in addition to cleaning to keep it happy. You get the picture.

Thanks for all of the advice.
emptied tank , put in new klean heat followed the directions and it fired right up. Left it on high for 15 minutes, about 10 of that with the lid down for heater mode. really puts out the heat.

Sorry, I don't know my Wallas Model number, but as I said, I use KleenHeat exclusively for the fuel. It is avalable at most Home Depot stores after Thanksgiving. I just picked up 4 jugs, ~$11.oo each. I have not had a problem with having that on the shelf for 2 seasons.
