An interesting side note on lead in gas is it also buffered and protected the valve seats, now valves have to have hardened valve seats installed. Sulfur in diesel lubricated the injection pumps and injectors now it is out, both led to unintended damage to older engines.

My Nissan Pathfinder manual says "... recommends the use of unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI ...". It also says "... you may use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI number, but you may notice a decrease in performance."

The ECU deals with whichever fuel is in the tank and operates the engine accordingly. FWIW, I can't tell the difference in performance between regular and premium gas in this vehicle. Normally I run it with regular.

And now I have to put Stanadyne into the tank at each fill to combat this.

I use non ethanol whenever I can get it. What I have learned is that it is more likely to be available at card lock stations. And card lock companies will accept private customers. Here in Boise, I can get both 87 and 91 non ethanol. And I have been able to get it at times while traveling even in such out of the way places as Colfax, WA. So if you have a card lock that is convenient for you to get to, that might be a good alternative. I know I pay more, but I am willing to do that as I think the benefits are worth it. And while the Honda small engine manuals won’t tell you not to use ethanol fuels, if you read between the lines, they don’t encourage it. If one is running a boat with a single, reliability is of great importance.

You can download an app. to your cell phone, that maps and lists non-ethanol gas stations by your GPS location. It is called "Real Gas". I use it all the time.
