“Get the Yamaha” is almost always good advice.

For over 20 years we have enjoyed 2 channel stereo music with a near-audiophile quality Adcom GFP 750 preamp and Adcom GFA 5800 amplifier (both designed by guru Nelson Pass of Pass Labs). That amp will put out 400w into 4 ohms all day long (or at least until the police arrive again). It has two cooling fans. It’s also a pretty good room heater, and almost as efficient as an electric oven. Recently it wouldn’t turn on, so I removed the cover and ordered a replacement pushbutton switch (the third), which always worked before but not this time. A LOT of power flows through that switch.

At this stage in life, I have a pair of $6,000 hearing aids (I’m sure my hearing loss is from 500 military flying hours, what else could it possibly be?). So maybe I don’t need another super expensive amp and preamp. What to do? Get the Yamaha.

I called Crutchfield’s and ordered a Yamaha AS501 integrated amp. It’s great. At idle, it’s so quiet you can’t even tell that it’s running. At WOT, the police still respond. Maximum pull out of the wall socket at WOT is only 540 watts, so I may see a decrease in our monthly electric bill. Doesn’t need even a single cooling fan, much less two. Looks almost the same in silver as my first decent Yamaha gear and Advent speakers and Sennhieser headphones in my 1973 college dorm room. Is that ‘timeless’, or is it ‘retro’? No matter.

If you need a new piccolo or drum set or piano, get the Yamaha. The three tuning forks emblem means this monster saltwater outboard motor is quite musical. You really should listen to one while savoring a fine wine while galloping over the Gulf at 6,000 RPM at 70MPH. Don’t drop your glass.

OK Colby, I know, I know….if you need a new bowling ball, get the Brunswick! They are BOTH timeless and retro, especially in the swirly colors.

Otherwise, ‘Get the Yamaha’ is almost always good advice.

As always, your complaints about my post not being on a ‘boating’ topic will fall on deaf ears.

Happy listening!

John

Hey, as far as I know, it's okay to talk about music here, too. What kind of tunes do you like to listen to on your modest little transistor radio?

Hey John, Glad to hear you have your tunes back, and oh, I'm glad to be able to hear anything. Are you sure those hearing aids are the result of those 500 hours of flight time or …. maybe has something to do with the (probably way over 500 hours) of music (at what leavel Cool Rolling Eyes during the years in that college dorm time.

Oh, I know, my hearing or lack of is (I'm sure} due to Hughes Aircraft -- otherwise know affectionately as Hueys "H & B" models.

Enjoy the tunes, your kind, as they are great for maintaining sanity.

And to keep on the right side of the site, enjoy some water tunes for me.

I fried my big Adcom amp somehow a while ago and replaced the amp and preamp with an integrated Yamaha also! It has a nice phono input for my turntable too.
I used to be a crazy audiophile now I am happy to hear anything after years of working in my metal shop, 9 inch grinders are the worst.
I am glad that at idle, almost no one can hear my Suzuki though!

Sorry John, I know nothing about bowling. Other than how to throw a gutter ball. Mr. Green Music OTOH? I was a drummer. Need I say more. Rolling Eyes Colby

Is that the same Brunswick that makes Bayliner boats? Those come in swirly colors too.

Thumbs up on Adcom

I just pulled out my Adcom GFA2 amp out of storage and connected to vintage Onkyo TX4500 receiver, Philips GFA 212 turntable and JBL Decade speakers . NSM jukebox is broke and play 45 vinyl on one of the home systems.

Well, I too have quite a substantial hear loss. Mine is attributed to my time as a sight-setter in a 5 inch gun turret, stationed right between the two guns. I'm grateful for the VA provided hearing aids and batteries. Anyway, in 2014 I bought the cheapest 4x4 Jeep on the market. For some unknown reason it came with a top-of-the line Boston Acoustics sound system which I didn't want or need and I told them I refused to pay for it. They threw it into the deal anyway. Wow, what a wonderful thing it is ! When alone in the car I take out the hearing aids and turn the music up, way up. What a joy I have discovered. I don't think I'll ever sell that little Jeep.

HA! I still have a pair with the switch box, in storage under our house. Had them since 1985ish. They were "top of the line" back then...
