I had a similar overheat . Tore engine down and found extensive corrosion throughout the water jackets. Even though the motor was pissing exhaust water the engine was not receiving even cooling. I never did determine if the water got in through the head gasket seal or a crack in the head or cylinder.
I went from twins to a new single. I would be reluctant to buy a used motor because of the hidden corrosion. A rebuilt power head from a reputable engine rebuilder might be your best option.
Good luck.

I went brand new. 11,800 OTD. Now i'm not sure what do do about the permatrims; mount on the new one or remove off the old one? removing is easier...

Inflatable boat specialists in oxnard. they wanted more but i walked in with 11k in cash inside a jersey mikes sandwich bag and then when they said they couldn't go that low i walked out the door. I got a call a few hours later and they had come down enough that i could deal with them. And yes, that was mounted.

Sounds like you're a "good negotiator". You'll sleep better withe new. I would.

This summer our lower unit had water in it. After speaking with the local Suzuki mechanic, he couldn't guarantee the gears etc wouldn't be toast. Could be $4K to replace. I began looking at new 200's. Found one in Portland area for $15K installed (last 2019 model they had). Best price I could find. I ended up paying the local mechanic to take it apart and diagnose. All was OK. Re-seal for $475. Whew... Our engine has less than 600 hours on it.
