It's a common modification, nowadays. The bulkhead is not a structural member, so it doesn't weaken the boat. It does allow for easier entry into the v-berth, and for greater air circulation. With a little addition to the length of the v-berth platform, it allows for a taller person to sleep on that side. It also allows for more foot room for the passenger in the front port side seat. Helps with folks who get claustrophobia in the closed off v-berth as factory equipped. Done on both the CD-22 and CD-25.

I haven't done it to my own boat yet, but I consider it an upgrade. After sleeping in there and getting soar all night from that foam mattress, its not the easiest thing for a big guy to get back out that stock opening. Im not getting any younger Teeth

We prefer not to cut the bulkhead. Makes the berth more cozy and separates it better from the cabin.

If you cut out the bulkhead, what to you do for the backrest of the forward seat when it is facing aft (dinette position)? On my 22, the bulkhead is also the backrest for the forward seat. Also, with the forward seat facing the dinette, the backrest would seem to block the opening anyway.

Some have made "new" back rests. Pretty easy to do. I have a 25 with the port side bulkhead cut out, and love it. We were talking with friends (non C Dory owners, but family owns one)--and they also felt that removing the bulkhead made the boat more "livable"--yes, there are always some down sides.
