Its been a lot of work but it is so worth it! Although I could have done a patch a repair job on specific areas water had made in through bolt holes, I decided to go the full 9 yards and replace the entire transom right across. I just left a bit at the top where the balsa look brand new. I am also building a new motor well for Brutus in the shop and will tab it in soon. Brutus is a real classic as a 1981. Luckily for me, the plywood floor was still rock solid so when I am done it will be one solid boat and good for a long time!

First piece of 1/4" marine ply treated with thinned epoxy and glued in with thickened epoxy

Good squeeze out

The last layer epoxied in over the entire transom today! (finally)Ready for glass.

Good squeeze out again on final layer giving me my 2"
I hope to have it ready for boat camping by July

David and Val

Thanks!

I know you have the same classic and understand what it’s all about!

It was going to be a father/son project but he got himself married so looks like it’s mostly a father project!

Thanks Chris!

When I was a young boy my dad was a wooden boat builder by trade.
I was hoping some of that was in my bones when I took on this project since I haven’t had any official training!

These boats are great for rebuilding and modifying.
Maybe that’s why I love them so much!

Nice job. Your father would be proud. Keeps those classics going and an entirely new lease on life.

It means a lot to have your support. Now I just want time to use it as much as I can before winter sets in!

Wow...we just had a towing accident with our 2001 22 Cruiser and the transom is cracked in a few spots...we did not think it could be repaired..maybe there is hope...thought boat would be a total loss.....we have been heart sick over it...it has not been looked at yet by the insurance agents...

C-Val, looks like you did a great job. Enjoy the fruits of your labors.

Windhorse, sorry to hear of your accident. Hope the boat was the only injured party and that is is fixable.

No way that a damaged transom, or even some hull damage included, would be a realistic "total" which could not be restored--but the insurance company might "total" the boat, and give a payout--which might be cheaper than repair--by professionals...A number of years back, I had a Grady White transom replaced for about several thousand dollars, by a guy who specialized in transom replacement. .
