Hey folks we just splashed it for the forst time.. went great but i would say the boats top speed and planing wasnt ideal.. granted we had 400 pounds of people but i was wondering what props folks use for the best planing and top speed? lso need a kicker and was torn between a 6hp and a 9.9.. WHAT WOULD FOLKS RECOMEND ??? [/u]

He was buying a 16 cruiser. The lower hp and weight for a kicker. What is the wide open throttle RPM? and GPS speed (in flat, calm water, no current)?

I would say it was barely choppy maybe 10mph breeze gps speed was 18.5.. no current on the canal. I wish i knew my exact wot rpm's but i forgot to pay attention.. On anothet note i also learned that boats on rollers will come off extremely fast haha.. lesson learned!!!

You need to take the boat out with one person and see what the top speed and note RPM Vs Speed as you come up on a plane. Without the WOT speed--and your trimming the boat for the best speed (throttle forward, and trim up and down until you get best speed.), then knowing what prop you have now--will give the best answer for what prop you need. If you are always going to have 400 lbs of people aboard, then get the numbers for this--and you will probably need a slightly lower pitch prop.

16ft cruiser
one 200# guy one 120# girl
DEAD CALM WATER
trimmed the motor for speed
5400 RPM's = about 20.5 mph
40 h.p. honda motor

Felt like it may have pushed water a bit and perhaps could get up on a plane a bit faster. All in all good test results. Should I mess with my prop based on these results?

Both Motors are priced about the same. Which would you choose and why?

Skiguy (& gal),

I have a 4 blade 12 (and an 11) inch pitch prop which should bring your max rpm up to about 6K and the engine will handle heavy loads a lot better than the 3 blade prop. Stop by next time you're at the parents and I'll loan you the 12 inch prop for a test run. If you can make it this week, I'll loan you the 11 inch also (it's on the boat now which will hopefully be heading out to the island with your dad next Sunday or Monday).

JAYYY!!! That would be amazing! I appreciate the help. I may have ran up and looked at how you had your anchor setup this morning as we left houghton,.. We will definitely be back soon!> It was really fun this weekend taking the boat round copper harbor and getting a little more comfortable with compass rose. It would be great to see the difference between the two props.. Other things that I noted from the weekend include- Moving the battery to the center of the storage area (to help out with balance) and looking into trim tabs as we did have a noticeable list to the port side..
cheers,
David and Rachel Beer
