For under a $100 you can get one of these. I had one on a RIB I used to own. worked fine.

The various iPad solutions (Navionics etc.) are all good. I have an older Garmin eTrex handheld GPS that runs on batteries. It also accepts the BlueCharts SD card from my chart plotter, which I like.
