Between the years 2002 and 2004 the Honda BF130 outboard motor experienced problems associated with an engine block casting defect. The defect caused "some" motors to overheat thereby resulting in various cooling and lubrication issues. Honda had a recall and replaced powerheads on the engines under warranty. They also extended the warranty for the series of motors bearing the known serial numbered blocks. Question: has anyone had experience with exercising the warranty (or) a known remedy for correcting the problem after warranty without a complete powerhead replacement?

I'm curious: do you have a Honda 130, or are you considering buying one? You mentioned in earlier posts you've had a couple of 22's but the 130 would have been on 2004 C-Dory 25s or earlier, making them at least 15 years old.

I'm sure the question isn't random, just not sure how to answer it.

Boris

Boris; Thanks for your reply. I have been down in New Zealand for 32 years on a seasonal basis. There is a "Rosborough Seaskiff 22" for sale here that has the Honda BF130 and I am close to making the purchase. But as always I am a careful shopper especially when it comes to large purchases. Turns out both the "frame serial number and the powerhead serial" (which are different), indicate it was within the range of recall for the "casting fault"! I have spent the past week writing email messages to Honda New Zealand, Honda Canada (its origin prior to importation), and two Honda forums in the US. I'm holding back on the purchase until I can confirm whether the warranty was completed. So far I have not received one reply!

Barry: The Honda BF 130 of that vintage is not considered to be a great engine, irrespective of casting flaws. It was heavy, not overly reliable, and was superseded with the re-designed 135/150 which are much better motors. Not sure this is what you want to hear but I believe it represents the truth.

Regards, Mike.

Thanks for that information Mike, it is similar to what I found this past week. I love the boat and would like to go forward with the purchase but hesitate. If I can find someone who has owned this motor and had the warranty done on the powerhead, or knows if there is an alternate remedy, it would help with my decision.
