Went out in the wind and bumpy Columbia today. Out of a good hundred crabs, I brought home five keepers. Lots and lots of little guys.
Here's what I was wondering. Even at half way to high tide, the river was still running out, at least on the surface, and started running out harder at an hour before predicted high. So if the salt water didn't make it up to where everyone was crabbing, could that be why the big fellers didn't seem to be around?
Stiff east breeze and lots of confused water on the way back in. Had to keep between 5 and 10 knots. Then I embarrassed myself at the dock by missing the slip twice. It'll be OK - I tied it up real good when I finally got her in there.
Maybe one more weekend for me. The commercial crab season opens December 1, but I have heard they are still squabbling about the price, so they may hold off for a while.

Buddies launched from Ilwaco Friday and escaped most of the wind; came home with near-limits for three, running 9 pots, most of them down low. Don't know how many crabs they handled to do that.
On the tide: a good deal of the incoming flow is salt water, which is under the fresh water, which is why you did not see that. The buddies were back late, so I think they were fishing late as 2 pm Friday, meaning the salt was up above Sand Island that late. Their crabs were average in size. No monsters.
