You will be able to park quite close to the dock during the day. Tom gave you a link to several camping places. I always sleep on the boat at the dock so not much help for land based camping on San Juan Island.

Welcome to the C-BRATS, and glad to have you there for the weekend. Lots of nice folks and great boats. Come on down to H dock and say Hi. Plenty of C-Dorys to look at and meet some great folks.

Welcome Dan and Arlyne to the family of C-Brats. Come out to the end of H Dock on Saturday between 7 and 9 am. The group will be having Coffee, Tea, Donuts and Juice to start the day together.

This event is great for families that do not have a boat or C-Dory yet because you will be able to see a good sampling of all of the C-Dory boats and to see them in one place. Maybe you will even be able to go out on a boat ride that day too!

What a great idea to camp on the island and spend time with the Brats.

Could someone recommend a campground that would be close to the dock?
Thank you!

Welcome, Dan and Arlyne. Last year was our first time at the Friday Harbor Gathering and we, too, had hoped for camping nearby. But campgrounds are not found in town that we know of. We checked out the San Juan County Park and it seemed like a good place to camp. You might be able to camp there, drop your camper and just come into town by truck. We have opted not to camp again this year - we like the Discovery Inn but there are many other good choices in town should you decide not to camp. Good to see another Oregon couple join the fun! See you there!

Hi Dan and Arlyne. We have taken our motorhome onto San Juan Island several times. Our situation was different, as we were staying there through an entire season (summer into fall) each time. There are a few things to know when bringing an RV to San Juan Island: first is the cost of bringing it on the Washington State Ferry. You will want to check with Washington DOT to determine cost and get a reservation. Not knowing if your camper is a in-the-bed pickup camper or a pull behind travel trailer, if you are longer or taller than a "typical" vehicle, you will need to have that information for your reservation.

There are no "full service" campgrounds on San Juan Island. There are a couple places that have water and electric. The closest to the marina is at the County Fairgrounds. Again, you would want to call them to make sure those sites are available at that time. The next closest place would be Lakedale Resort. They are set up mostly for tenters, but do have some sites with power when I last checked. The county park that was mentioned in a previous post is a pretty place on the west side of the island (other side of the island from Friday Harbor). I have seen pickup campers and an occasional pop-up camper there, no idea about any kind of utilities. Again, you would want to check with them about availability: (360) 378-8420.

The roads on the island are all fairly narrow, the fastest speed limit on the island is 45mph. At the time of the year of the C-Brat gathering, things are still pretty quiet on the island - good for you as far as getting a reservation, but again to make sure that any of the above facilities are open.

As I recall, the cost to bring our 30' motorhome with a small cargo trailer onto the island by ferry was just over $300. By comparison, bringing just a truck was around $75. Fares vary according to the time of year, and you should still be in the lower cost spring season in mid-May. If you choose to leave your truck/camper in Anacortes, doing a walk-on for the ferry is around $12. Once in Friday Harbor, unless you intend to drive around the island, there is no need to have a vehicle there - groceries, restaurants, and various hotels and B&Bs are within walking distance of the ferry landing.

Hope that helps with your planning.

Here's a link to county campground info...

Only the Fairground or San Juan County Park (of those mentioned in the link) are on San Juan Island.

Thank you for the additional information. We have spent the last couple of days researching on the internet the ferry schedule, fares and camping options. Our camper fits on the bed of our truck, so that keeps the fare on the ferry lower.
Lots of options to explore.

We are planning to launch from Bellingham, and return there on Tuesday after the gathering. We will ferry and trailer to Pender Hbr/ Garden Bay and spend the next two weeks in Princess L and in Desolation Sound.

Anyone else planning to be in the area?

Chuck

Hi Chuck, Great to hear you will be here. I am thinking I may be able to be around for a bit after the show. I have friends who will be on their own 25 and want to do some buddy boating. I am yielding to their schedule as they will have to get back to w@*k on their schedule.

Sorry to say that we are not able to attend this year. Maureen and I look forward to attending a gathering soon. But we just had a life changing experience; a new job out of state. Notice i said "a" new job. We both have jobs, now in different states. Good thing the CD is on a trailer! Looking forward to seeing all the photos and hearing the stories.

Patty here. Chuck and Penny, so glad to hear you will be at FH. We can REALLY talk "The Great Loop" now!! Unfortunately I have jury duty starting the 20th and can't go cruising after the gathering.

We'll most likely be on the tail end of our SJI trip and don't want to fully commit to showing up for the gathering. Do you think it's a problem just to show up without a reservation?

We'd definitely like to at least show up and say hi to everybody, just not sure on timing as we have to be back to Portland the night of the 19th.
