VHF Repair Possibilities

This info is off a form dated 2006 so I am wondering if anyone knows anything about this place or has a better recommendation for a VHF repair. Sometimes Internet stuff stays forever and the business has been closed for years. (I sent an email today, will see what I get back.)

Business Name:
Marine Radio Repair & Alignment

At: lee@hamradiorepairfix.com

Technical Specialists, LLC
5911 E Dr MLK Blvd
Tampa, FL 33619

I am considering doing a repair if I can find a reliable repair person or facility. . I have had the radio checked, and it is the “Receive section” that is “gone out” according to the marine electronics guy (FCC, NMEA, ABYC and some other certifications).

I don't know the company but I'd be shocked if one can get a radio repaired and shipped back and forth for less than what it cost to buy a new one. So I'll be interested in hearing the final story.

I was thinking the same as Roger. Probably better off just buying a new radio.

This is also from their website, which consists of one page:

Quote:
First of all - Estimates are always free! You only pay us for a completed repair. If we can not repair it properly we will not charge you a bench fee. You will pay only the cost of shipping and a small fee of $17.50 to $35.00 for the time required to properly unpack and pack and ship it back. If you bring it in - this fee does not apply. Our labor rate is $35 per hour. You will not find a better price anywhere. How can we do it? It's because we have plenty of technical data, one of the most complete parts inventories anywhere and most of all - many years of experience. Most Marine Radios are repaired in 2 hours while some may take longer. Parts installed range from $1 to $22 typically.

I am not promoting this as the best, first or only place. Just looking for options.

If you love your Raymarine 218 enough to get it repaired, you could also consider just buying another 218, and then you'd have a compatible mic on back-up too (we know you love being redundantly redundant!). There is currently a seller on ebay selling one brand new 218 for $267 plus shipping.

For a few dollars more you could also get a new GX2200 that has the AIS receive you mentioned as desirable in your other thread. Decisions decisions! I do love the built-in GPS and AIS receiver GX2200, which is tied to my larger Garmin display, but for general listening I much prefer the GX5500 which is physically larger and has a much better sound quality to my ear (my only complaint with the 2200). I may still add an external speaker to the 2200 someday.

-Mike

Mike, I remember your thread about the SH 2200 and the sound issue and going up to the GX5500 for the improved sound quality. I have actually looked at one of those at Rodger's Marine Electronics. I need a smaller face size, more like the 2200 which may be where I wind up eventually. (Much prefer the ICOM M-506 but don't have the physical room.)

I contacted Raymarine about updating the MMSI number on my 2005 VHF and they told me that they do not support or repair units over 10 years old. I bought a Standard Horizon 2200 instead.

I think it may be a worth a try. I asked specifically if the Raymarine 218 receive section might be repairable. He said yes, I can send it in. So that is a likely option.

BTW, I called Rodger's Marine in Portland. They do not do any VHF repair.

OK, I took Mike's advice and fell into the "Ebay" trap. He found one, sent me the number, I looked it up, checked the references, and hit it with some plastic. WOW, I paid for the FedEx Ground, 7 -10 days. It was here in 3 days via USPS Priority. Perfect. Next step, have the electronics guy check out this radio, and if it checks out good, it goes into the boat.

Some details: It was listed as new, never installed. The photo showed the radio (with the tape/cellophane cover on the LCD display) and a mike, still in the cellophane bag. Thinking it was new, never installed, I expected to get the box, the bracket and the mike holder. WELL, those "accessories" were not in the picture, and they did not come with. Oh well, I have all those parts so no problem. Lesson learned. Don't expect to get stuff not advertised.

On to the next phase.

Need to read the fine print of the listing. However, if you did not get what was promised you can take it up with eBay or PayPal (if you paid that way). Resolution of issues is pretty quick and easy.

You are right. I read all the print, just expected stuff not in the print. Some might say this was "Operator Error".
