Hi,
I'm seriously looking at a 22 Cruiser. Looks to be in good condition overall, but there are some cracks on the top of the starboard gunnel. Apparently the original owner ran a strap across the aft gunnels when trailering, rather than using the eyebolts on the stern.

Attached is a photo. The cracks appear to be just in the gelcoat, about the thickness of a fingernail. Does it look like anything serious? Should the cracks be filled with something to prevent it from getting worse and flaking? Is it DIY?

Thanks in advance to the collective wisdom of the C-Brats community

Orcas Dorcas,
I am not sure how to view the image of the boat. I liked on the highlighted link and it wants me to add a new sight to my computer called drop box.

Sorry,
I must not be adding the photo correctly. I can't find any instruction on how to add an image to the post.

Running a strap across the gunnels shouldn't cause cracks. That's how my boat is strapped down, and I've trailered 30,000 miles in just the last two years!

Usual way is to have a C-Brats gallery, load the photo there, then link to it in the forum. This forum does not allow direct inline images in posts. You can link to other images, but they have to be accessible via a URL.

You need to contact the moderator (Tyboo) to get a gallery set up.

I cannot access your photos--but small cracks on the gunnels are not unusual. The strap is not the cause--I have also trailered 10's of thousands of miles, with no problem ref straps.

These are areas where the gel coat is thick. There is not a structural problem. The cracks should can be ground out in "V" with a Dremel bit, then filled with gel coat. If severe, then grind off all of the gel coat--and re-coat.

No reason to reject the boat. Maybe negotiate with the price a little.

Our boat has these where the gunnel is joined with cabin. Always assumed this is just where some extra gelcoat was applied.

I don't worry about it, since its not structural.
