As I was rewiring my 1981 C Dory 22' today I was just wondering if my project boat is the oldest one out there still going strong? Apparently it was the 10th one ever made. I am the second owner. The first owner bought it right off the floor the first time C Dory's went to the Seattle boat show.

Just curious. Sometimes I like to look at all the new ones others have, but my heart can't seem to escape the simplicity and style of the originals! (Besides I could afford new ones anyway!)

Good looking boat! Isn’t there some way to tell by the VIN what number it is, or something like that. I think mine is like 20-30 or so but I don’t remember how I learned that.

There should be an HIN (Hull Identification Number) On the aft wall of the transom, (mine is on the upper, starboard corner), and I believe there is one on the forward side of the forward cabin wall, above the center window. I don't remember the code but it has the manufacturer, the year, the size, and the number of the build.

I'm not sure if yours is the oldest, but you have to be close. I know of one, a 22, up at the north end of Vancouver Island that, I believe, has been owned by the same owner since it was new, and it is close to the same age as yours. The owner is not active here, and though I know it is still there, I don't know how much use it is getting any more. (That is a research project I started on once and then got distracted and off track.) Maybe I will see if I can chase anything more out of that.

Thanks! Another Original close to home!
I was starting to think I was the only one!

We could start our own chapter in the club - "The Classics"

Here is the number stamped on my boat

MFN220100581

Later the factory attached another number
WNZ15754F1

Maybe someone else knows what these numbers stand for
Thanks for the response

C-Val, Yes, you are in good company.

Roger Sensei, Thank you for the interpretation. At some point there was a change in the HIN numbering and in WA state there is a change in registration or title numbering.

My boat has CD022205G405 and reflects the change (I believe Coast Guard driven) in the early 2000's.

I need to do some research. I think I can find the HID # from the N. Van Isle boat.

C-Val, in the pictures you posted, the top one with the WA state numbers: Was that when you bout the boat from a previous owner? Or were you registered in WA for a while before White Rock?

Also, Any one looking for a Classic that could turn out like this one please PM me for location info.

Hi Harvey

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

You are absolutely right. This was the first pic of pulling it out of the water after my son and I bought it from Washington. (we trailered to Blaine and then brought it to White Rock on the water)

The previous owner had it in a boat shed in the water all the time This was good for sun/rain protection but that's why the barnacles. Scraping the hull and re bottom painting was my first job!

The previous owner took care of the basics like upgrading the motor and having the transom rebuilt where it was mounted etc. Since then I have been taking care of a lot of the other things like rewiring, new attenna/radio. cleaning, etc. It seems pretty solid. I know I still have some fiberglass work to do at least on the sidewall of the splash well but I have been using it steady as it is. We caught the world's most ugly fish with it this summer!

Thanks

David

The HIN format was changed in August 1, 1984. So you have the original format stamped on the hull. My best guess is that the second number was one assigned by the state of Washington--it is not the format of any federal HIN.

Beautiful work!
