I’ve been trying to figure out how a hammock might work out using the gunnels and came across this:

https://crestliner.excelimages.com/21611-j-hook-hammock

I can’t really figure out how it is attached and if something like this could work on a C-22.

Any ideas?

Chad, I just copied this from the text box near that photo:
"J-Hook Hammock with pillow pocket stretches over the gunnel and secures in the J-Hook canvas track on the outside of the gunnel...."

Same kind of track as used for attaching an awning or cockpit cover. It could also be done by running a line under the hull and up to the other end of the hammock.

See you tomorrow night.

Don't know if you can see this, but at the cabin top where the sunbrella cover attaches, there is a metal extrusion, shaped like a "J" laying down with the vertical upright as the back that attaches to the roof. The edge of the fabric has a seam sown in and there is a 1/4" line threaded through that seam. The curve on the J extends around the curve to enclose the line and hold it in place. There would have to be one of those extrusions on each side of the boat to hold the ends of the hammock in place.

OK, that link doesn't show the photo here, but copy it into your browser search line and it will take you to the photo in my album. (Cotton pickin tablet won't let me do the pix right.) And yes, I had the image buttons in front and back of the address. OR JUST CLICK ON THE LINK TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE PHOTO. Embarrased Disgust

Hope that helps some.

The aluminum extrusion (some boats it is plastic) is called an "Awning rail". This could be bolted to the side of the boat...But it might be easier and more. esthetic to put finder hangers or footmen loops you can hook the hammock ends thru.

you could just run a line over the rail and under the hull back to the other rail and attach the ends of your hammock. Pull that tight and the hull is taking up the stress not the rail. easy on and off. Just weight the middle of the rope and toss over the stern while holding the ends at the rail. Easy.

I use a ENO hammock and just clip up under and around the cleat on each side. But, my Venture 23 is a few inches wider than a 22.

I had a j-clip fastening system on my Premire Pontoon mooring cover. Best system ever. No stretching to make snaps reach. Picture this: curl your right index finger into a “j” shape. Imagine that as a bracket sewn onto each end of the hammock. Now curl your left hand index finger into a “j” shape and imagine that as an extruded channel mounted upside down on the outside of the gun whales. Now interlock your two j shaped index fingers. You will not regret this system, Premires patent must have run out.
