OK, since it isn't a poll, I'm gonna return with some less flippant remarks. Mike is right in that there are a few non smokers who are absolutely and vocally intolerant, but that goes for just about any controversial habit, such as eating meat, getting too close to Orcas, supporting Hillary, listening to Rush, or discussing Fords vs Chevys vs Dodge.

Mike has his reasons to avoid them, but I find most aggressively intolerant individuals both tedious and boring. More because they can't seem to keep from proselytizing than because they hold a strong view or have a habit I may not agree with.

As someone highly allergic to tobacco products/fumes, I can and do control my personal environment at all times and I don't allow smoking on our boat, home, or in our vehicles. No exceptions. Fortunately, I've yet to meet anyone unwilling to respect my requests.

On the other hand, if you happen to smoke around me at a gathering, while I'm aboard your boat, admiring your horse. tasting your beer or exploring your new digs, no big deal! I'll either stay upwind or quietly wander over to a more environmentally friendly area --- like behind some idling Cummins powered vehicle.... Wink

Had to say sumpin: I used to (when younger and less-wise) have little tolerance for "smokers" some of the very best people I find as true friends (and thats rare) are the "smokers". My concious might prick me a little, if I tossed "buts" over board, but you should see the amount of trash and debree even on a lot of the PW Sound beaches Unlove Sad a but' I would not even notice! Cigars-buts degrade so fast, toss-em at will Thumbs Up there always "given to the horse" for deworming... maybe theyl sink and deworm a good halibut Very Happy Greg

Xmas LOL

I'm the worst, a red neck, sweed Smile
Actually, the sweeds invented snus and it's regulated as a food item there. The European Union banned the sale of snus except in Sweden. I have a meeting next week where one of the big issues is need for our graduates to be well trained in cultural diversity....we don't care if they have any concept of physical or fiscal fitness just as long as they embrace whatever cultures we find acceptable....originally they wanted to embrace all cultures, when I inquired about female circumcision the PC police started back peddling.

Ooops, getting side tracked.....smoke away

I want to be respectful, but man, that's an act I find very difficult to understand.

I liked Byrdman and Halcyon's approach to smoker pals. I spent five days cruising with a longtime buddy who energetically puffed Marlboro lights. Yeah, I probably took in a few second hand cigs, but his company was worth it. Besides, I smoked for years, and he tried to be considerate.

My name is MIKE and I AM A SMOKER!

I smoke in MY home, on MY boat and in MY car and truck. I do not smoke in other folks domain. I would not get on your boat at the dock unless first I knew you didn't object to me smoking or I had a 21mg Nicotine Transdermal Patch with me (I keep them handy for airplane rides and movies exceeding 2 hours.

I have never befriended anyone based on their "habits", only on their character.

I should mention, having grown up on a Kentucky tobacco farm where the main cash crop put clothes on my back, food in my belly and a roof over my head, that if smoking kills me, it's only fair. However I think the odds are with getting broad sided by a senior citizen (one of us) in a Naples intersection during season is much more likely.

Ok I'm gonna put my 2cents worth on this at the peril of ticking a few people off. My wife and I smoke. We make a consorted effort to not offend those around us. I can understand those that say they are bothered by "second hand smoke" . My issue is the large number of people that claim an alergy to the above. I recognize that some people are very sensitive to others smoking. Call a spade a freaking shovel. if you are sensitive and extremly bothered i can deal with that. An alergic reaction, however is anaphalaxis or breaking out in hives. If you don't require a benadril or a shot of epinepherin after being around smokers then you are not alergic. You are simply annoyed or sensitive. It seems to have become the PC answer to a relavant social issue. Just my 2 cents worth.
Norm

Hi Folks,

I hate to Brag, but I just had my Colon checked. This came after having everything else checked out. I am 66 years old, and healthwise, in the top 1% of Americans at my age. I DO NOT smoke or drink. I do not like secondhand smoke, so I do not allow it on my boat or in our house.

I hope to live to a ripe old age, sailing my C-dory around the waters of America.

If I stay out of other guy's girl friend's beds, I should live to a good old age.

If you smoke, I feel sorry for you. If you are upset with this message, tough luck.

My wife Sheila gave up smoking over five years ago. I find gum around the house. It's a lot better than dirty ashtrays.

Ya know...because of me telling things like it is and not dancing around that big ol dumb a$$ elephant in the middle of the room at work....and telling the Chief of Staff of the AL ARNG that if folks get offended and their feelings hurt by what I say.... they should have bought ballet tickets if they wanted a nice soft touchy-feely moment. I took an oath to defend and protect...even in the PC military world... and it got me sent to one of the L O N G courses cause they know I read slow and their are not a lot of charts, numbers, pictures and/or symbols in those classes..... so my friend, and I mean that...the COS is a long time friend of mine... and the Adjutaunt General appointed me Diveristy Officer for the AL ARNG... Well... I found out the long couse was ON Cocco Beach... So I had to go tuff it out with an ocean front view of the dailey sunrises (way pretty)... and ...it put me in range to go get Jabez... my 1st C-Dory. And yes, I did hang around in the smokey ol bar room...but I do not smoke... I am just addicted to late night and sunrises. Love Ya All.... Mean it!

Hey...uh...Byrdman,

Aren't you supposed to be totally occupied performing your five days of hard labor? You should be exhausted and sleeping. It appears you're sneaking out to the barn once in awhile. Please correct your behavior before you're busted and get an extended sentence.

Love hearing from you.

My wife and I both enjoy a good cigar (been known to have a few Cubans on board now and then ..thanks Canada) and we have friends that smoke that occasionally light up on board.

I would not want it in the cabin but I have not found it overly offensive or intolerable for anyone. Cigarettes are horrible for your health and we always cring when friends we care about persist in smoking but the alternative of not having them participate in our adventures and life is not an acceptable option.

Everyone we know who smokes is respectful in their smoking and we try to make them feel at home in our home or boat. Life is too short not to.

I use to smoke but quite about 15 years ago. I don't know anything about be alergic to smoke, but can tell you that it can be a trigger for asthma suffers. I've got asthma pretty bad and have to stay well upwind of any smoke. Don't try to preach about the evils of smoking,.... just try to stay upwind!

Art the wine man smokes.......My dilemma was that he brought the wine, paid for half the gas and escorted a drunk me back to the boat so I didn't feel I had a leg to stand on.

P.S. He only smokes in the back of the boat
