The boat itslef has probably not changed a lot since 1999...a 50 horse on a 22 is definitely underpowered. You want a 90 or two 40s or 50s...

If the boat is in good shape, buy it. Nice used 22s as other C-Dory boats are hard to come buy. Then, go use the 22 as powered. It takes about 20 minutes (some have said 10 but I always dropped the pin...could not find the prop wrench, the grease tube rolls down the driveway... you get the idea) and never could change out and store the removed prop in less than about 20 minutes.... One prop for 2 folks on board and not much stuff.....and then another one for 4 folks and stuff....or simply a lot of stuff for a long cruise. if you like to "Trawler Cruise"...at say 6 to 10 knots and enjoy all the sites of close water boating.... then you may find the 50 you have sufficient, cost less, and operates more echonomical. I have to say that I truly have logged many more hours going 10 knots or ....much slower than over 15 knots..... Then....if you do not like the power set up, sell it and go for the 90 (same weight as the 70)....or twins.. See other threads on endless discussion on twin verses single or single with kicker. Your boat, your needs, your money, your style and type/areas of use,....
But, buy it, use it and enjoy!

jennykatz-
Ditto what Pat said about the motor(s).
200 ft of chain is probably too much weight up front. I've got 100, whiich holds the bow down in chop on freshwater lakes and bays, substituting for trim tabs.
Those out in the ocean swells will prefer mostly rope rodes with 10-25 ft of chain to help the anchor set and stay by keeping the pull horizontal.
The chain (1/4" High Test) weighs .74 lbs per foot. 74 lbs is enough for me! 150 ft (the max I've heard of using before) would weigh 111 lbs, and 200 ft = 148 lbs. Probably a bit much.
If you're on the ocean, you'll probably want to go over to the mostly rope route. But if you're on choppy bays and/or inland, try it with the 200 feet and see how you like it. Move 50 feet at a time across the covered v-berth to the middle of the cabin (center of gravity) and test again. See how much weight you want up front.
Also, as long as you don't have to run it through a windlass, you can cut the chain, then put in a repair link and put it back together. However, chain going through a windlass must not have repair links in it, because the repair links are larger, and won't pass through the gypsy pockets.
Does the boat have a windlass? What type of anchor? What's the anchor locker look like with 200 ft of chain in it? Does it have a drain? Is the chain 1/4" High Test?
More questions? Keep in touch! Joe. _________________ Sea Wolf, C-Brat #31

There are very few minor changes between 99 and current models, things like the lazeret lids and bilge pump location come to mind. If the boat has one 50hp engine, you're half way there, have another 50 slammed one there and you'll have a fine craft.
99 was a good year _________________ Ken

If it is in good shape not counting a little fading and minor dings and if the price seems good............PULL THE TRIGGER!!!!! You and your wife will love it. Don't forget to look at the trailer condition.
The bow will be a little heavy with 200' of chain and a little 50 on back. Mine is a little stern heavy. These boats can take allot of weight. So I wouldn't sweat it.

yup, if the price is decent and it's in good shape, you should grab it before Brydman does:)

I am C-Dory'd full right now. But thinking of pulling FreeByrd, re-do her bottom paint, fix up a mark or two, repaint her floors...and just some general 3 year old boat stuff... and then put her back on the market all nice and shinny...and put that money towards a TC255... Thinking of lowering the price to about $70 during the "boat show season.." and with folks who want a TomCat...but not the basic $110K price range..
Good luck on your purchase and please let us know. What type of 50hp motor is on the boat now? |

The bilge as it sits works for me. It seem only to pump rainwater during storage. I have found a bilge is of little use when boating. To clarify myself ..I can't get water into my cockpit unless I pull the plug! Nice problem to have! If your bow heavy you may like the bilge at the bulkhead. Some add a second in rear. I'll do the same if I need to. Rain water likes to collect by the cabin door and a simple sponge and bucket keep it in check.

jennykatz......Hope you get the boat.... Good Luck. As far as the chain rode goes, it would be ok on the ICW and close inshore, but for offshore it wouldn't work. We go grouper fishing in our 22C and go out about 50 miles to 100' +. When that deep, we have 350' 3/8 nylon and 25 feet of 3/8 chain. When not fishing, I take off about 10-15' of the chain. You can get by with the existing HP, but probably won't be happy. Most are powered with 90HP in either single or twins; we have a 90HP Yamaha which was chosen because of the numereous Yama dealers in our area and it was Fuel Injected which the Honda wasn't. Dealer only carried Honda & Yamaha, but if he carried Johnson, a 90HP Etec would have been a strong contender. Hope to see ya on the water! _________________ Roger on the

"I have to say that I truly have logged many more hours going 10 knots or ....much slower than over 15 knots"
I think this is one of the most astute observations I've seen in awhile and I have to agree. While nice to have, that big engine is simply idling along the vast majority of the time. The only time I ran it for any length of time wide open was for the "speed test." Running the CD (22 Cruiser) wide open just isn't something I think most of us do very often, when it planes at such a slow speed.
You can have a lot of fun with it as is, and when time comes to repower, up it then. A bonus is there's bound to be even better engines on the market than we're running with now - more amps, less weight, and maybe they'll start supercharging the lower hp models by the time you repower. |

I too have to agree with Byrdman and Flagold.
The factory recommended power for a C-22 is 75hp. More available power than twin 40's that have to carry their own weight as well and more low end torque than their higher horsepower (usually 90 hp) bretheren. Indeed, you have many power choices, but if you have budget constraints at all, the cost differential between 75 and 90hp choices can put a nice fishfinder/GPS at the helm and you'll get a lot more use out of that than the 15 hp difference.
The C-22 is a pocket cruiser not a pocket rocket. Been there, done that. It's rare that we even hit 4500 rpm anymore. Especially offshore.
Bottom line, 50hp is definitely marginal unless you just plan to putt along the inland waterway and enjoy gunkholing. Have fun with that new toy

I'm in that less than one percentile group that would like the 50 on a 22. For crabbing, fishing nearby, shrimping, and the type of sightseeing Catman and the old guy like to do -- 50 h.p. would be adequate for me. I'm usually full of water (2 8 oz. bottles), one or rarely 2 people aboard, enough fuel for the trip plus a little reserve, one small battery, no kicker. Did I say I like a light boat? And 50 h.p. will easily plane a light 22.
I'd put a 50 E-Tec on that 22 and smile every time I passed a gas station
For you other 99 percent 50 just won't hack it.
