I just bought a new to me 86 Angler model. Bought a brand new trailer for it then found out the transom is soft. I like the lay out of the boat but after taking it out in some 3 ft waves it feels like the boat just wants to spin out of control. Do the new 22 anglers that don't have the totaly flat bottom handle better. Should i start over with a newer boat. How hard is it to replace the transom on these boats. Thanks

Had an 84 classic and replaced with a 1995 cruiser. It’s a very different ride. Much more stable, particularly at 18-22 kts and anytime there’s chop. The one thing that made a huge difference on my classic was a permatrim foil on the engine. It allows you to get the bow, and therefore the part of the boat with a bit of a V, down. Transformative in choppy waters and anything but a following sea. Best $300 I spent on the boat.

As for the soft transom, there are many ways to go. A full removal of all wood and seacast seems to be one way that works for many.

If you’re in PNW, the guys at bitter end Yachtworks give the best advice out there. And do exceptional work if it’s something they can handle.

Thanks for the response, Is there a certain permatrim that would be recommended or will any produce the required results.

Permatrim is a specific brand, and an different design than the "fins", like dolefin and .... The Permatrim has both a horizontal plate and vertical fins that help with directing the propwash flow and thus the direction of the boat movement. I wouldn't recommend a substitute for Permatrim. Physics laws are not broken.

I actually really liked the dynamics of the hull with the permatrim (and a Honda BF90.)

Trim down: power through manky waves. Spirit animal: warthog
Trim 3/4: good balance for most conditions. Spirit animal: Golden retriever
Trim 1/2: dancing on air, must be glassy. Spirit animal: hummingbird

I exaggerate, but the ability to transform the ride of the boat with trim is pretty amazing. I would gain 1.5-2.5 knots when conditions allowed just with the trim up a touch more. And could keep my sanity when crossing Rosario with wind against tide with the trim down.

This ability is unique to the classic. My cruiser is overall more stable in that middle position than the angler , but in some ways less flexible.

Got the permatrim installed, took the boat out off golden gardens to get the last day of Coho fishing in and test out the permatrim. It made a big difference. Thanks for the great advise.
